Where is my neutral safety switch on 1979 Ford ranchero?
Parts stores don't seem to carry it. Where is it on the car?
For auto transmissions, it's either on the drivers side of the transmission by the shift linkage or at the bottom of the steering column under the dash near the firewall. If you have a floor shifter, it can also be located at the shifter itself… Remove the console trim to get at it. There's also an adjustment process to make sure it lines up correctly with the shift linkage… See link below. May need to order the part through online websites that cater to old car parts or Ebay. Or bypass the switch wiring entirely to allow starting but be careful as you can then start the car in gear which can cause damage.
"Loosen the neutral start switch attaching bolts.
Position the manual shift lever in the park position.
Insert a 3 32 in. Drill bit through the switch, and move the switch as necessary to allow the drill bit to rest against the case.
Tighten the switch attaching bolts to 55-75 inch lbs. (6-8 Nm) and remove the drill bit."

Most cars don't have a neutral safety switch. That's why parts stores don't carry them.
Look at where the shift cable goes into the tranny. The unit with the wires going into it is the range sensor which should have the neutral safety switch in it. If you have t go to the dealer make sure to take your VIN with you.
Wow, they're expensive! http://www.ebay.com/...1361564067
i hate to suggest the combination of bypass + great caution when starting the car, but $199.00 for the OEM switch is quite a bit of change.
People these days… Answer questions they know nothing about. I am referring to the person that responded "most cars don't have a nuetral safety switch" most cars with automatic transmissions have a nuetral safety switch to prevent idiots (like the one that left that response)from starting the car in gear and running over the neighbors kid. Some people… If you don't know the answer to a question then don't say anything at all and let someone answer the question that actually knows the answer.
- Where is the trunk safety release on a Ford Tempo? Mine doesn't have the release buttons in the glovebox and when I bought it the trunk wouldn't open. I got the back seat out but there's so much garbage and so little room I'm trying not to sift through all of it to find the safety release, does anyone know exactly where it's located?
- What is the switch on the bottom side of steering column on a 1979 Ford E250 Econline Van? My van will not shift into reverse or park and will not start. I have replaced the neutral safety switch, checked the shift cable and shift cylinder on the steering column. While doing that is see a sliding electrical switch on the bottom of the steering column which works in conjunction with the shift lever. What does this switch do?
- My 2000 Ford Taurus won't shift from neutral to reverse or neutral to park? Its curently in neutral but the steering colum shifter will go down to drive or drive 2 and will go back to neutral, but then it stops so I can't back up or park the car.since it doesn't go into park, I can't even take the keys out of the ignition. Any ideas?
- How do I hook up the nuetral safety switch on a 94 Ford Ranger? I have a 94 4wd Ford Ranger with a 4.0 Engine, And i put a A4LD Automatic Transmission in it, but I can't get the Neutral Safety Switch or Starter Safety Switch and now I can turn the ignition and it won't crank or even turn over and I heard that was the problem. I can tell where the plug in goes and the wire that goes to it are the same plug in but I just can't get it to go in can anyone tell me how it goes in if there's a trick to it or something?
