What would cause an ignition coil to fail repeatedly on a 1997 Ford Thunderbird?
The car has 65,000 miles on it and has received regular tune ups and oil changes but over the past year or so it leaves me stranded every 3 months or so leaving me to have it towed to the nearest mechanic--including the Ford Dealer once. Every time I'm told it was the ignition coil and it is replaced and the car runs fine for several weeks until the next incident.
Just buy a spare and keep it in the trunk. That way, it will never fail.
Probably the ignition coil is faulty/cheap brand
Don't know about 1997 but early 2000's Thunderbirds had bad problem with water getting in coils causing engine problems. It was so bad that Ford extended warranty for coil replacements on those cars. Same problem as yours, coils quitting on a regular basis.
Wrong size fuseable link.
- Would an ignition coil cause no power? I have a 1979 Ford ranchero 302. No start no crank no radio but I have headlights no dim when I turn the key. New battery, relay and starter is good. Trying to determine if it's the ignition coil or ignition switch. It has started right up a few times but mostly nothing when turning the key.
- Why is my 1997 Ford Thunderbird making a loud knocking noise as I? I bought a 97 ford Thunderbird not to long ago and it is starting to make a thumping like kknock. Sound like it is coming from under the car but only happens when I'm driving. I got an oil change n still hear the knocking why?
- How to remove ignition switch Cylinder from 98 ford crown victoria if the ignition cylinder is stuck? I have a 98 crown Victoria. And i used a wrong key by mistake yesterday and now my actual key won't work. I've tried removing the ignition lock cylinder but any video i watch on Youtube tells me to turn the key to replace ignition lock cylinder but i can't do that because its jammed. I've tried jiggling the steering wheel and turning the key but no luck. Pretty sure its the ignition lock cylinder but i can't get the damn thing out without turning the key
- Do I have a bad ignition coil? Today I was driving on the highway at 70 mph and all of a sudden the accelerator was having no effect. I kept pushing and releasing it trying to get it to catch, but it finally died on the side of the road. I started the car right back up and it made it home fine(several miles). I have a 2000 Ford Focus and I'm hoping this is a coil going bad and not a fuel pump. First time it's happened. What do you think?
