What makes the difference in engines?
I'd like to know how companies (ford, Chevy, dodge. Ect) change the engine to make them better besides how many cylinders they have. How do they make different sounds, more or less power? Sense they all have the perfect air to fuel ratio from the factory that would make a difference right?
Actually, the fuel air ratio can be slightly changed to improve power, thermal or consumption efficiency.
on top of this, things like how restrictive the intake and exhaust are (including the valves), how the fuel is mixed in (a jet, fine mist, or other methods) or even the shape of the cylinder head (Dodge's Hemi refers to the hemispherical cylinder head they use) all change the characteristics of the engine.
engine sounds are usually characteristics of the cylinder count and arrangement, engine size, and exhaust shape.
the overlap (or lack of it) of combustion cycles dictated by the cylinder count and arrangement will change the way an engine sounds because of the pattern of puffs of air going through the exhaust and frequency explosions inside the engine.
the engines' size will also increase the volume and sound of the engine. More air being pushed out means more volume.
lastly, the exhaust itself which acts like a musical instrument will also change the volume and tone of the sound. By changing the size and length of the pipes and how restrictive the muffler is, car companies can change how the engine sounds. Supercar companies like Lamborghini, Ferrari, or Mclaren have engineers whose sole jobs are to perfectly tune the exhaust sound coming from the engine. (a large part of the supercar ownership experience comes from the sound and if a car sounds bad, the owner might not be too happy)

Every engine is different. Not just from different manufacturers. Take Chevy for an example. The Chevy small block is the block for all their v8s the block is the same size for all of them. But they can range from a 4.3 v8 all the way up to the 400 sbc. The difference is things like bore, stroke, piston size, compression. What they're made of. The sound mostly comes from the exhaust. If you cut the exhaust off they would all just sound pretty close
- Where can I find crate engines for sale? I'm not looking for craigslist or ebay engines. I'm looking for a reasonably priced ford 347 stroker engine without the JEGGS or SUMMIT RACING price tag. Any websites or stores I can go to to find a complete 347 for under $4,000? And no I do not want to stroke a 302 myself, I want a 347 fresh out a wooden crate.
- Ford ka stuttering 2004 only when engines warm why? Stuttering at low revs when engines warm when press down on the accelerator, so does it the worst when stopped at the lights an pulling off and when at low revs in any gear. I was thinking on changing the spark plugs and leads but I only changed the plugs 6months ago could it still be the plugs? Where would you start with the problem? I've also heard that the fuel pump failure is a common fault on ford kas could it be a early sign of that going?
- Is Ford switching all their vehicles into ecoboost engines? Why is Ford heavily advertising their Ecoboost engines a lot? I know is suppose to boost up fuel economy and horsepower but they taking out V8 engines. Other Auto companies they refine their V8s and make them fuel efficient or at least increase mpg. Ford is like ditching V8 and put V6 twin turbo to solve their problem quickly to me. Anyone agree?
- Do ford use the same engine blocks for different size engines? I know some car manufacturers use the same engine blocks for a 1L all the way up to 2L but obviously with different size bore holes for the pistons. Does anybody know if ford use the same engine blocks on there new fiesta, MK7 59 plates, from 1l up to a certain size. I look at my block which is a 1.4 and it looks rather big for a 1.4 engine. reason i ask is i'm thinking of putting some more power behind my car, and just want to know how much block i have, and how strong it is.
