What kind of oil is put in a 1996 ford windstar?

Do NOT rely only on VISCOSITY RATINGS! Il like all other AUTO technologies does NOT STAND STILL! Get a MILD motor flush done and then use ONL MOBIL ONE 0W-30 oil to save on GAS and get MORE POWER while improving carbon footprint and LOWERING emissions, and saving your exhaust system as well! NO FACTORY anywhere uses VALVOLINE in ANY YEAR ever for good reasons! CONOCO PHILLIPS is the REAL choice by FOMOCO< though PENNZOIL and MOBIL ONE are BETTER oils! MOBIL ONE 0W-30 will protect engine bearings in SUB ZERO tempos while reducing friction and SAVING engine parts from tar and COKE and SLUDGE deposits!

That depends… Are you asking about ENGINE oil? TRANSMISSION oil? POWER STEERING oil?

5w30.

I recommend Castrol GTX 20W-50 High Mileage Motor Oil.

Designed with superior detergency to fight sludge build up
Gives your engine superior oil burn-off protection versus leading conventional oils
Seal conditioners help minimize leaks
Formulated with advanced additives to help minimize wear
Conventional oil might not do enough to protect your high mileage vehicle
Using specially formulated high mileage oil is recommended for cars or trucks with more than 75,000 miles and can help improve the life of your engine

The oil spec'd by Ford is 5W-30. Any API certified conventional or synthetic or semi-synthetic will do.

20W-50 would be too thick for my tastes, if you're having to run 20W-50 on a vehicle that calls for 5W-30 due to oil consumption or leaks, then you're just using duct tape on the Titanic.

Contrary to what Robert mentioned

"Do NOT rely only on VISCOSITY RATINGS! Il like all other AUTO technologies does NOT STAND STILL! "

Viscosities are a set of standards have not changed much at all over the past 60 years or so. You'll see some very mild variance in any given grade, for example some brands have a reputation for being "lighter" or "heavier" for any given grade, but still will meet the specs for that given viscosity.
