The Benz Patent-Motorwagen (or motorcar), built in 1886, is widely regarded as the first automobile; that is, a vehicle designed to be propelled by an internal combustion engine. The original cost of the vehicle in 1885 was $1,000 (equivalent to $26,248 in 2015).
The vehicle was awarded the German patent, number 37435, for which Karl Benz applied on January 29, 1886. Following official procedures, the date of the application became the patent date for the invention once the patent was granted, which occurred in November of that year.
Although Benz's wife, Bertha, financed the development process, and would hold patent rights under modern law, as a married woman she was not allowed to apply for the patent.[1]
Benz officially unveiled his invention to the public on July 3, 1886, on the Ringstrasse in Mannheim.
About 25 Patent Motorwagens were built between 1886 and 1893.

Before Mr Ford starting building cars, most every one was hand-built one at a time, & many had a chassis built by one company & the body was built by another. So there were a lot of very small 'car makers'. Don't even know where to look for some sort of a list of who may have been calling themselves car builders back then.
- Were the 1989 Ford Probes first launched before September 1988? I know model years usually come up in September of the previous calendar year. Were the first 1989 Ford Probes on sale or released before September 1988? Typically the new model year cars show up around September of the previous calendar year. But sometimes manufacters will release models before that. Ford did the same thing with the Ford Probe, it was released around March/April 1988 as a 1989 model.
