2009 Ford Taurus - Low Voltage?

So, a few days ago we bought a battery from WalMart. When we connected it to the car, the horn started blowing and it caught fire. The fire was in between the battery and engine block. Smoke (that smelled like burned hair) came from the vents and around the radio. It burnt up the voltage regulator in the alternator. We replaced both the battery and alternator and the voltage is still low. It should idle at 12.2, however it idles at 11.13. When it's off, the voltage is 11.748. What could be the problem? We were thinking fusible links or voltage regulator connector, but I'm unsure if this car has those things. Again, the battery and alternator are brand new and, when you test the computer, no codes pop up. We're desperate for help!

You should probably look for burnt wires and replace any blown fuses and fusible links. Sounds to me like you hooked it up backwards. I would just take it to a shop People that can't even put a battery in a car with out staring a fire shouldn't be under the hood! Cars don't just start on fire for no reason and human error is the culprit! You hooked the battery up backwards. Might be time for a new car, you caused some very serious and possibly permanent damage to the electrical system by making such a blunder. So it runs and everything works? Maybe your meter is bad.

  • 2001 Ford Taurus, 156k miles. Today started missing and skipping, low to no power? Idles smooth, takes off slow. Sluggish going up hill, but will go faster down hill. Push down on the gas- little change. Ck engine light is on of course. Any idea what it could be?
  • 1998 Ford Taurus Dies At Low Idle? 1998 Ford Taurus I know needs new alternator because battery won't stay charged. When I boost the vehicle off it will run at 1000 RPMs smooth. No vibration. As I lower RPMs below 1000 it begins to sputter almost like it's missing. Eventually will die completely. Could the alternator not keeping charge to the system cause this? If not what could be other problems?
