2001 Ford Taurus power steering fluid leak?
My husband bought a new power steering pump and installed it last week, but when he added the power steering fluid it leaked out almost immediately. Any idea of what would cause this?
Not putting the hoses on properly. Or a bad power steering pressure hose, runs from the pump to the rack. It will suck up all the fluid the first quart or so, due to the system being empty.

If it sat and dripped? These have a reservoir o ring that is sensitive to part position. If you handle it rough, you could disturb the o ring.
If there's a hose problem, you would find it by steering left and right and inspecting. The hoses go from the front, down and across, up over the trans, back to the right side, then a cross the top of the rack to the valve. Could leak anywhere.
also, there were seals on most of these at the fitting threads.
and a tube seal in the fitting. Then a soft metal ring holding it together.
If there's a fitting area leak, often a new set of hoses is the answer.
You must pinpoint and understand it to seal it.
Sounds like he did a half a**ed job of installing the power steering pump. He should crawl under the car and have you pour some fluid in it and see where it is dripping out.
- Power steering pump burning fluid? I have a 1991 Ford Ranger. The engine was rebuilt so its at around 70,000 miles. I have to refill the power steering fluid a lot. Way more often then I should have to. I can't see any kind of a leak at all and no evidence of one. It also smells horribly burnt. Almost like the pump is just burning through the fluid. Any suggestions or ideas as to what this is and a possible fix?
- Power steering leak? I've got a power steering leak in my '04 ford, am willing to pay $250 for repairs, would a power steering leak cost me $250 or more?
- Power steering leak on my 05 ford transit? The leak seems to be coming from a rubber hose that connects to the power steering return pipe and has had the connection tightened already but is still leaking. Will I need to buy a new return pipe or is it something easier to fix?
- Where is my power steering fluid resevoir? I drive a 2002 ford Mustang gt v8 and I'm trying to find my power steering resevoir. I can't seem to see it anywhere under my hood? Any help?
