Have i been exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos?

Me and my brother were working on some drum brakes about a year ago, we didn't have a puller so we used the other option, beat on the whole exterior drum until it comes lose. It was a 93 ford ranger, and thus most likely had asbestos in the brake shoes. I spent a total of around 2 hours out there either beating on it or sitting next to me brother who was beating on it. The garage we were in has no proper ventilation, but its not insulated well and thus air is allowed to escape. The shoes, if i remember right, were not crumbling. I was 13 at the time, and children are more effected by it the younger they are. Now i'm paranoid of everything that could contain asbestos, but mostly paranoid of that possible encounter. We took basically no precautions because everyone makes it seem like asbestos was phased out entirely in the 80s, what we know now not to be true. Do you think the asbestos would have been disturbed? Do you think there's a high chance of me or him developing asbestos related cancers or other problems later in life? The problem is i don't know what's true and what's not. Is just one exposure that horrible, or not?

Nope I doubt you have any problems

Assuming they were asbestos, one mild exposure like that is not going to be much of an issue.

It is prolonged and repeated exposure that allows the natural crystalline fibers to get lodged in the lung tissue.

You do know the brake pads have been changed several times over the years. You are being ridiculous.

It is possible but there iz nothing you can do about it now so worrying about it is pointless.

No.

Very unlikely. If you watch those lawyer ads on TV, when they are looking for asbestos victims, they target pipe-fitters and those working in Navy shipyards, people exposed for years on end. Auto mechanics are not their target clients.

Brake drums on a 1993 vehicle do NOT contain asbestos.
The whole thing about the "dangers" of asbestos is over-rated. The only way you're in danger from asbestos is if you're engaged in a profession where loose astestos is sprayed; you don't wear a protective mask over your nose while you're working with it, and you inhale particles of the sprayed asbestos dust over a period of many years.
The asbestos that is found in the insulation of older homes and buildings is compressed asbestos, and that type of asbestos does not emit dust particles. You could break it into small pieces, and it wouldn't hurt you.
I'm in my 70's now, and I grew up in a house in the '50's that was completely covered on the exterior with asbestos shingles, for insulation. We kids were constantly breaking those shingles with baseballs and my dad was constantly cutting new ones to fit and replacing them. I nor any member of my family has ever had any sort of problem from the compressed asbestos in those shingles. \

Yes

In the early 1970's I worked in a shop where all I did was repair brakes. The usual way of cleaning out a brake drum on the brakes themselves was to use an air gun and blow the dust away. Obviously that left me in a cloud of asbestos dust. I'm now 80 years old and I have never had any problems from the years I was exposed to asbestos dust. By the 1990's brake she's did not contain asbestos so you are not at risk.

The Ads you see on TV are from Ambulance chasers who make a career out of stirring up trouble. The hazards they mention are exaggerated. Many countries do not allow such ads.

Yes

  • How dangerous is water to a cold air intake? I have a 1999 Ford Ranger that I recently bought and it has pretty bad gas mileage and I'd like to fix that and the power behind the engine. Where I live we get pretty significant rain fall and some small puddles that you end up having to drive through. The last think I want to do is hydro lock my engine. Are heavy rain and small puddles actually a danger for hydro locking a CAI? Even if I were to buy one of the waterproof jackets?
  • I just failed the Ohio echeck cause of the NO emissions levels were too high? I know high levels of NO is caused by overheating in the chambers. I just noticed that my air filter hose elbow has a small crack and can make the fuel mixture a little lean. I just don't want it to be the egr valve Any solutions or other causes? I HAVE1995 FORD PROBE. AND THE ENGINE LIGHT IS NOT ON So I don't know WHAT THE PROBLEM COULD BE
  • For ford vehicles why is there sub models like XLT XL etc. Are those related to Trim levels? I'm trying to know more regarding the Submodels for Ford Vehicles I'm confused with XL, XLT lauriat, if they are related to the trims or the vehicle package
  • Is a 1995 - 2001 second generation Ford Explorer dangerous or safe? No I have been reading that Ford Explorers will roll over even with good tires or bad tires (notably Firestone). Will the Ford Explorer rollover with tires made other than Firestone and is in a very safe or very dangerous unstable vehicle?
