How dangerous is water to a cold air intake?
I have a 1999 Ford Ranger that I recently bought and it has pretty bad gas mileage and I'd like to fix that and the power behind the engine. Where I live we get pretty significant rain fall and some small puddles that you end up having to drive through. The last think I want to do is hydro lock my engine. Are heavy rain and small puddles actually a danger for hydro locking a CAI? Even if I were to buy one of the waterproof jackets?
Most aftermarket CAIs are vulnerable to hydrolock, but some have drains. If it were mine I would get a complete intake from a pull-it-yourself yard and make it stock again.
I have a friend who is active in modding his cars. He had a Scion and he put a K&N intake on it. One day he went through water that was deeper than he thought and hydrolocked the engine, hundreds of miles from home. He sold the car as-is to a woman who did not replace the intake when she replaced the engine, and a year later she hydrolocked it as well. No fun at all.
You aren't going to fix mileage or power with a fake cold air induction setup.
Plugs, wires, general tuneup. IF cold air intakes worked, you'd have to use more gas to keep the mixture right, so your net gain would be zero.
You get power or economy, not both. Choose. There's a reason the 40+ MPG vehicles are all sub 4000lbs with small engines.
- Why does my cold air intake make my car super slow? I bought a cold air intake for my 2015 ford taurus put it on and lost power alot of power. I didn't use the normal air intake tubing i stayed with the tubing that comes in the car and put a filter at the end and reconnected the one sensor. Now my friend did this to his car and it gave him more power i don't know why mine loses power
- Can i unplug my mass air flow sensor to get my cold air intake to work better on my 2015 ford taurus? When i put the cold air intake on my car it went really slow so if I unplug the sensor would it fix that problem
- What is the best air intake for a 2014 v6 mustang? I can't decide what to get i was thinking either the ford racing intake, the 302 boss intake, lincoln i takes, or bbk. I was thinking about k&n but i feel they are a little over rated. Tell me what you think and give me some more suggestions please!
- Should I get a cold air intake? I have a 2000 v6 ford mustang, I was wanting to know if it's worth it buying a cold air intake. I've heard from places that it's not Bc it really don't add HP or torque like they say. But others say it can add 10+. I can find some on eBay for like $40 or $50 so is it worth it?
