Can I replace the gas tank of one automobile with a gas tank from another automobile?

The short answer can be a Yes or No.

But for me, I own a 1994 Ford Ranger XLT super-cab truck. Underneath it is a 20 gallon polyethylene gas tank. A hairline crack has formed just above the bottom of the tank. So It can hold some gas below the crack line. Three times now with two different epoxies I have tried to patch and glue it up, But it still leaks because common gasoline is acidic and there's pressure in the tank during use.

I can go around looking for a replacement. But then this question came up. Can I use a gas tank from a different truck? Do I have to use a tank from another 1994 Ford Ranger?

I hope the answer is yes because that will help me a lot with my particular problem.

Please and thank you.

It would most likely have to be a tank from a similar vehicle.

1. You can probs get the tank <plastic> welded but it will need to come out to do that.
2. A fuel tank from another 1994 Ranger will fit straight in, obviously. Wreckers.
3. A tank from another make/model <may> fit but you'd have to check all the dimensions, positions of fuel pump outlets etc. A ball-ache basically. Ranger was the same as the Mazda truck of the same year (B2600?). Try finding one of those if you can't find a Ranger wreck to cannibalise.
4. Depending on the shape, you may be able to get an aluminium or steel tank fabricated fairly easily. But you know, $$$.
5. You know that upgraded 1,000 Litre long range tank you always wanted? Now would be a good opportunity.

93-97 Ford Ranger or Mazda B series

MANY models of vehicle use the same tank.
MANY different tanks are used on different vehicles.
You would need the EXACT model to determine if the tank you are looking at is compatible.

Auto salvage yards have a book that tells what tanks (or any other parts) are interchangeable with yours. Check with them.

Yes

Call 1-800-RADIATOR and find out what they charge for after market gas tanks. They have quality replacement parts and great prices.

You can look up the gas tank for your truck and see what other models it will fit. Obviously if you have a 24 year old fuel tank that is bad, most other 24 year old fuel tanks will be bad. You should look at a new replacement.

  • How do people distinguish one car manufacturer from another? I know so many people that can just point at a car driving by and say. "that's a Ford" or "that's a Chevy" How do they do that?
  • One shop tells me hose is kinked, another says bad wheel bearing, what is going on? Someone mentioned we should replace the wheel because it was warped, we replaced the wheel. We then had the same issue and shop mentioned we need to replace wheel bearing. We shopped around and went to another shop that said wheel bearing is fine, but the brake hose is kinked. They state that the kinked brake hose is causing the wobble sound… 2007 Ford Fusion SE
