1992 Ford Ranger driven on the freeway with the parking brake still on! What damage was done?
Added (1). Son got it for Christmas and new to driving. What kind of work would a car mechanic need to repair the damage? There was smoke coming from the rear wheel well.

Guessing that the parking brake for that truck operates the rear drum brakes by a cable, and nothing else.
Depending on how much driving your son did that way… Worst case, new rear brake shoes, and drums. (But the drums are probably OK: they're really tough to hurt.)
Best case: he shortened the life of the rear brakes, but didn't do anything that really needs to be fixed right away.
You could get a mechanic to inspect the rear brakes. Or test it for braking performance yourself, if you're familiar with how that vehicle handled before. Pickup trucks especially get very little braking from the rear wheels, under the best of circumstances.
You probably wore it out
INSPECT the brakes when the brakes are COLD. Anything else is just GUESSING.

- Is it safe to drive a ford ranger on the freeway for long trips? Can a ford ranger safely sustain speeds of 85-90 mph without any problems at all? I'm looking for a pickup truck that can haul stuff and is good for driving off roaming occasionally but I also what a pickup that has good performance as well. My question is can a 2007 ford ranger XLT 4.0 v6 5 speed manual sustain speeds of 85-90 mph or is that pushing the limits of this truck?
- 1997 Ford Ranger 4.0 V6 won't shift into drive after being driven. Takes longer than should to shift into drive when first started? It will go in reverse fine. First thing in the morning when I leave for work, it will shift into drive on it's own, but takes a bit longer than it should. After getting it warm, won't shift into drive at all. I can shift down to 1st or 2nd, then back into drive and it will "pop up" into drive within a second or 2. I also have a ODB2 error P1744 (Torque Converter circuit).
