When did Ford switch back to the Mustang 5.0?

I recently bought a 92 f150 and the seller claimed the engine was a Mustang 5.0 from the first model year they switched back to the 5.0. I have no idea when or if Ford did this, but I assumed it was in the 5th generation. The guy did say it was late 90s to early 2000s. Any help on where to find the factory casting nubers or plates would be awesome.

The 4942cc "5.0" pushrod V8 was available in Mustangs until 1995 then was phased out until a completely different 5.0L V8 (a DOHC unit nicknamed Coyote) was introduced in 2011. There was no 5.0L V8 offered in Mustangs in the late 90s early 2000s, Ford had switched to using the 4.6L "modular" SOHC V8 between 1995 and 2011.

Ford offered the 4942cc pushrod "5.0" V8 in Mustangs as early as 1979, the engine was dropped in 1980 due to the fuel crisis but was re-introduced in 1982… So if he's talking about THAT time Ford switched back to the 5.0, the engine could actually be 10 years older than the truck!

You'd definitely know if the newer Coyote DOHC engine was in the truck - it makes a LOT more power than the old pushrod "5.0" ever did and it would look enormous in the engine bay (compared to the pushrod "5.0" V8) due to the DOHC design.

I don't know what to tell you regarding what he said except that his time frame for when the engine is from is impossible. You can look up online where various casting numbers and serial numbers are located for different Ford V8s if you want to figure out what's really in it, but if his story is that far off I'm not sure it makes sense to bother. That's up to you. Good luck. Hi what a load of rubbish as the FORD F series is not actually a Ford it is a MAZDA truck. The Ford V8 is in the MUSTANG.
