Any modern oil will work. The Ford recommendation is going to be an API certified SN oil. Look at your owner's manual for grade. It's likely a 5W-30. In that case 10W-30 will be fine for summer use, 5W-30 for all year or 0W-30 for sub-zero weather.

If you have low oil pressure problems you can use 10W-40 instead. Also if you're concerned with engine wear you can use "high mileage" oil, which is an API SL oil. But beware, any oil thicker than 10W-40 or isn't an API certified SM or SN is going to hurt the catalytic converter because of the higher ZDDP content. Of course at that mileage, you're about due for another catalytic converter anyway. Basically you'd only use thicker oil or high-mileage oil only to baby it along until you can get the engine rebuilt. But if the oil pressure's fine and you don't have any ticking sounds then you'll be fine with regular SN certified 5W-30.

There are also many specialty and racing oils. Again, these aren't really necessary, but will hurt things like the catalytic converter.

The only other thing would be to chose between synthetic or non-synthetic. Sadly, unless you buy racing oil, the bottles marked synthetic are a group III oil, which isn't a true synthetic. Group III is better than group I or II by a little bit. But basically you'd only chose it as long as you don't have any leaks. Group III "synthetic" may leak out a bit faster than groups I or II "conventional" oils. Same oil that got you this far will work just fine. Go synthetic, i'll tell you that much. You want to use the 'thinnest' oil that will stay in the engine between routine oil changes. Ford recommends 5W-20 for that car.

  • Car consumes 3/4 Quart of Oil for first 1000 miles and basically stays at a 1/4 for another 4000 miles? I have been noticing this for sometime, no visible leaks underneath, no drips either and I have been looking and checking pretty routinely, what would cause after a oil change for the car to consume 3/4 of a quart for the first 1000 miles and then basically stay at a 1.4 for another 4000 miles? Vehicle is 2006 Ford Taurus SE OHV 3.0 note. When I say a quarter. I'm talking about the 1/4 line (amount) on the dipstick from full to re-fill
