What defines a BOSS 302 engine? (Mustang advice)?

So I'm looking to purchase a 98 mustang. The guy selling it doesn't know a whole bunch about what was done to the engine, he said he bought it like this but he claims it was swapped with a Boss 302. I don't know much about muscle cars, so is there any way to actually verify this is a boss 302? I was told the boss 302 has a 302 Windsor block and 351 Cleveland heads. Since this engine has edelbrock heads, does that not make it a boss? I've attached a picture of the engine if that helps at all.

Also with the 302 engine, edelbrock heads, Parker high rise intake manifold, Holley carb and a cam he said it makes around 370 hp. Does this sound realistic for that engine and modifications?

Any advice on this car before I look at it or purchase it would be greatly appreciated! The body is not in the nicest shape, and it has 177k miles (only 10k on the engine). He's asking $3200. Is this a good price for this car with said modifications?

Not really. The original Boss 302 had 4 bolt mains and the block itself was much stronger than the typical 302 due to different metallurgy. Ford came out with new Boss 302 crate engine a few years ago, but it had GT-40X heads.

Anyway, that car doesn't have a legit Boss 302 under the hood. It's just a typical 302 with aftermarket heads. 370 HP is a probably optimistic. You didn't mention what cam it has, but with a moderate cam, it's probably putting out around 330-340 HP. Short answer is no. Long answer is your about what a Boss 302 is and this is not it, the original Boss 302 only came out in 69 and 70 all you have is modified 302 and nothing is Boss about it. As far as price goes if you want to pay that for the car then go ahead and buy it, the mods add no real value to the car what so ever.

Ford has alot of good engines and I read the boss 302 is a rear engine, they also say it's one of the biggest, and the 427 sohc is the biggest and most powerful so out of the boss 302, boss 429 (I think is the right number) and 427 sohc what would it be goijg from bigger and most powerful to lower engine you d use as a more standard engine? Also which engine would be best in a 1969 and even a 2011 or 2010 (if you wanted to put the same engine in an older and newer mustang.)

I'm going to a junkyard where they don't help with finding vehicles, so it would be helpful to know what vehicles only have a 302 with a 4bc, that way I can look it up on the website and know exactly where its at.

Really looking into the new models, but am also loving the BOSS 302 model… To my understanding people are saying that the 2015 mustang is basically a Boss 302 but even better. Of course thats one pro for the 2015 model, but at the end of the day… A Boss 302 is a Boss 302… No other one like it. Would just like to hear opinions or thoughts on which car would better or which car do hardcore mustang owners prefer?
