Do I need some king of grease to replace spark plugs?
I'm going to replace the spark plugs of my 04 Ford Mustang V6 3.8 L. I have the tools and spark plugs. I know the GAP is 0.054. However, someone told me I need grease to addo to the spark plugs and wires. Is that true? If so, what kind and how to apply it.
I'm guessing they were talking about dielectric.
Probably don't need it, I haven't seen it from the factory, however that would be all I can think of that someone would reference in terms of the plug wires.
Don't waste your time or your money on dielectric grease on spark plug wires. It's fine on battery terminals to prevent corrosion but totally unneeded on spark plugs.
Some anti-seize compound on the threads is usually a good idea.
Dielectric grease does two things: First, it prevent the spark plug boot from fusing to the porcelain. You'll appreciate that when you go to change spark plugs next time. It's a be-yatch to remove boots that are fused. Second, it reduces the likelihood of arcing to the block.
Unless the shop manual specifically requires anti-seize, you should NOT use it on spark plug threads. Almost all new spark plugs are nickel-coated these days to prevent seizing in the cylinder head. If you do apply anti-seize, you MUST reduce the torque by 10-15%. Basically, applying anti-seize to modern spark plugs is an out-dated method.
All I know is you should put some anti seize on the spark plug threads when installing them if he spark plugs do not already come with some sort of coating
You don't actually have to have it but it helps! Dielectric grease on the plug boots keeps the plugs from jumping spark!
