Can I drive someone else's car if I don't have insurance on that car?
I drive a Honda Accord and have just minimum liability on it.
My brother drives a ford Mustang and he also has just minimum liability…
We're paying for our own car insurance but what if I drive his mustang and crash it will my insurance cover the costs or do I need to be added onto my brother insurance policy for the Mustang to be able to drive it?
Or just by having insurance I'm protected by driving any car?
I mean just for the other person car I crash not the damages to my own car I'm driving.
It depends on the policy your brother has. Some companies have policies available that allow anyone with a drivers license to drive a car and be insured if the person wants to pay for it. If he does not have this type of policy, you would need to be added to his policy. With car insurance, only the car the policy is written on is covered. The coverage does not extend to other vehicles you might drive.
If your brother does not live with you, your operation of his heap is PROBABLY covered under the 'permissive use' provisions of HIS insurance. And vice versa for his operation of YOUR heap.
However, IF YOU SHARE A DOMICILE, IT IS VITAL YOU MAKE NO ASSUMPTIONS.
"Minimum liability" is a Really STUPID idea for ANY car. What happens if you are driving EITHER car, and you crash and total a brand new Mercedes Benz or BMW? Your MINIMUM liability will pay up to the maximum of your policy limit, which I'm guessing is somewhere between $10,000 and $15,000. YOU still owe the rest of the cost to replace that $65,000 automobile. Do you have $50,000 in your piggy bank that you can afford to pay for your mistake? Don't plan on having a life for the next 20 years or so, because you'll be paying for someone else's car for that long.
REAL insurance doesn't cost all that much more to protect yourself from being in poverty for the rest of your life.
In the United States an automobile is insured, not a person. You, or your brother, can grant permission for someone else to drive your vehicles. By doing so you are agreeing that you, and your insurer, are responsible and liable for whatever might happen to the vehicle while the driver is behind the wheel.
The insurance coverage you have on your vehicle would only come into play if you, or someone else driving your vehicle, were involved in an accident. Same goes with your brother's insured Mustang. Should he grant you, or anyone, permission to drive the Ford it would be his insurance coverage on the vehicle which would be in force.
Depends on the state. Every state is different.
Ask your insurer or read your policy again.
- If you have enough money, can you have a new classic car built? Like can I pay to have ford build me a 1970 Mustang? Lets say I don't want to buy an old car and restore it, I want a 1970 but straight off the factory line. Can you have a car built with the old style frame, engine, trans, etc?
- Can i test drive a car if i don't have my license with me? I'm thinking about buying a used 2007 ford edge from a small car lot. But i lost my license and the dmv said it would take 10-14 business days to get a new one. The dealer doesn't have sale people. It is just him and his wife whom work there and they are leaving for a 3 week vacation friday morning so i would like to get all this done before then. Will they let me test drive it without a license?
- What would have have to pay if I bought a used car from someone? I know I have to pay insurance but what else would I have to pay, I know I have to pay some type of tags. And how much would it cost ( I'm wanting to buy a 2000 Ford F-250) I live in Missouri.
