1995 mustang RPM issues?

I own a 1995 v6 ford mustang. When I'm driving some of the times it's a bit normal, but lately at slow speeds or when stopped my RPMs will rise and drop. When stopped it rises and Lowers pretty obviously especially as I slow down to a complete stop, you can hear it as well. When driving at slow speeds any where up to about 45 or 50 it also does this but not as noticabally and normally when I give it gas. If I give it more gas it definitely runs a little smoother but still does it.

Verbrenne das Stück und kaufe einen Volkswagen. Immerhin wurde es von mir erfunden.

Does it happen when you have the brakes on? Check the vacuum booster on the power brakes for a vacuum leak.

Check for air leaks on the induction system.

Hi so what about engine wear with such an old engine. This is now a very old car over 22 years old. Design to last just 8 years or 100k miles.

Check for vacuum or air intake duct leaks or possibly a bad TPS. Vacuum leaks or air intake leaks can cause erratic idle speeds or erratic rpm's due to too much unmetered air entering the system that the PCM/computer can't adjust for properly to maintain proper fuel trims. Test the TPS for smooth voltage readings as you slowly open the throttle from closed to full open… If you get erratic readings at some points, replace the TPS… Common issue that the sensor may develop wear spots or carbon buildup in some areas of high use such as closed throttle or low speed throttle angle which can give erratic voltage readings to the PCM as to actual throttle angle which then alters fuel trims improperly and results in high/low rpm's or erratic idle speeds. Could also be due to varying fuel pressure issues… Test for proper fuel pressure… Bad pressure regulator, clogged injectors, clogged filter, etc. Check the primary O2 sensors as well… A lazy/bad sensor can trick the computer into altering fuel trims improperly which can cause erratic idle speeds or power lags.

Based on your description, it sounds more like a bad TPS but could be other issues that need further testing.

  • What RPM should my car idle while driving and what RPM should I shift? I have a 2003 Ford Mustang V6. 5 speed manual transmission. This is not the first manual car I've owned, but I'm curious. I never really look but I've read in some places that in order to save gas you should shift at 2 RPM before I used to shift at around 3-3.5 RPM. Also what's a good RPM my car should idle at while I'm in gear? Let's say I'm driving in 3rd gear. What's the ideal RPM to stay at before needing to shift.
  • What RPM are you supposed to shift at in a 2001 Ford Mustang V6 3.8L 5 speed? I've been shifting at 3k, but here lately it has been really hard to shift the gear into place using the stick, so I started shifting at 2k and its been much smoother but I get off a whole heck of a lot slower. Which RPM is best suited for the type of vehicle I'm driving?
  • Should I trade my 1995 ford mustang v6 5 speed for a 3000gt v6 five speed? Mustang runs and drives, 3000gt runs and drives but need ball joint and a arm. Should I trade if he throws money in for trade?
  • 1995 Ford Mustang Gauge problem? Hi. My mustang has a electrical issue with the gauges that'll say the car is overheating but it's really not and the temp gauge, alternator gauge and oil gauge will move when I roll down the windows, brake, turn on the ac and more. Any fixes to this?
