Make any car a convertible?

So firstly I wondered if you can make any car convertible? I'm getting a cheap ford ka for my first car… I so wanted a convertible but couldn't afford one. Is making mine into a convertible an easy task? And would it be costly?

Sure it can be done but it would cost far more than the Ka is worth. Making a convertible is not just a matter of cuttin the roof off and having a softtop made. A substantial amount of strengthening goes into a covertible to replace then strength and rigidity lost by removing the roof and half the door pillars and the rear quarter panels. The Ka is not exactly the strongest car around anyway and basically your idea is definitely not on.

Forget it.
If you want a convertible, buy one, it'll be £££thousands cheaper than it would cost to get a garage to create one.

To do it safely and pass a SVO test, which it would need to be allowed on the road, think in terms of tens of thousands.

In practical terms what you're wanting to do isn't possible.

If you've got enough money, anything is possible. However if the reason you've bought a Ka rather than a StreetKa is cost, there's no way you can afford the probably hundred thousand pounds or so required to convert to your car - although you could probably halve the cost by using the parts developed for the StreetKa.

So when your insurer asks "Has the car been modified in any way?" and you tell them you will not get cover. If you want a convertible, it will be cheaper to buy one than try to do this as it will cost a fortune to do and a fortune to insure

A modern monocoque chassis needs it roof for structural strength, so you'd have to do a lot of work to get the strength back.

It'd need to pass the individual vehicle assessment (IVA) due to modifying the chassis and that will be costly.

Not a wise idea. The roof imparts strength and rigidity. You would have to add stiffening structures to what's left. It would also need VOSA approval. It's a specialist job, not DIY.

Not very easy, removing the roof removes a lot of structural strength that has to be built into what remains of the car.

Almost any car can be made into a convertible but there's a lot more to it than cutting the top off. The entire body must be reinforced and the top mechanism installed. Typically the cost is more than just buying a brand new convertible. The only reason anyone would do it is that the car they want isn't factory made as a convertible.
