That or simply a dead battery.

There's a number of things that can cause that. Dead battery, bad relay, bad starter, bad battery cables, and/or connections.

That and every other engine in the world.

That would be a battery with not enough power to start the vehicle. Charge the battery and then go to an auto store right away to have the battery and charging system tested for free.

This is more likely a flat battery. As insufficient power cause relay to start but then drop out and repeat cycle fast until we stop using cranking circuit on ignition.
however other factors may do same e.g.Loose connection.Corrosion etc that cause voltage drop. If all those are Ok relay itself may in fact be faulty.
we can easily swap relay to test but do ensure we have charted battery connected or jump with another. If a jump start ha sit cranking easily then battery needs looking at.E.g. Why di sit go flat? Do we have a power drain or possibly a battery cell died?
