Why isn't the Ford Focus selling in the US?

It's their best selling model world wide, but nobody in the US is buying it.

The most popular version is the 1.6 diesel with a stick. I wonder how many of those sold in the US bwaha.

The car was redesigned in 2012 and Ford sold them as fast as they could build them. The Focus is due for redesign in 2015. But to say nobody in the US is buying them is simply not true. Up through May of this year (2014) Ford has sold 94,390 Ford Focus's in the US At their current rate Ford will easily sell over 225,000 of them this year. When the redesigned Focus comes out you can bet Ford will sell plenty.

Because we like trucks! The best selling vehicle here is the ford F150. Because that V8 and twin turbocharged 6cylinder is what we want XD it does sell well over here, I see them everywhere and saw an ST the other day. We don't have the diesel models here. Gas only and that goes for most of our small cars. The only diesels ford sells here are V8s.

I thought they sold ok.

I think the primary reason is the god awful automatic. Ford decided to forgo the conventional torque converter automatic in favor of a dual clutch setup, but did a lousy job with it. It's clunky to say the least, and has been criticized by the media and customer sat has not been good either.

It's too bad - the Focus with the stick is a nice car, but not enough Americans are willing to buy one with the stick.

They do not sell the diesel version in the greatest country in the world because we have what's called emission control. Which means car manufacturers can't sell a car on US soil that exceeds the emissions limit. Which diesel engines far exceed. There are plenty of diesel trucks though… Different set of rules for them.

They do not sell any diesel cars in the US except VW and Mercedes. They make it difficult some how.

Americans don't drive stick…

The 1.6 diesel isn't available in the US because of draconian emissions laws. Why do you think the diesel Jetta and golf are cheaper in Europe, but are the most expensive models in the USA? Because it literally costs VW tens of millions of dollars to federalize their TDI engines every year in order to sell them. Plus, Americans see the word "diesel" and immediately think of big, noisy trucks spewing black smoke. It's stupid, I know…

As for the manual part… Americans are lazy, which is why about 95% of all new cars sold are with an automatic transmission… Nevermind the fact that manuals are more power efficient and more fuel efficient.

Why the Focus doesn't sell very well in comparison to its counterparts? Again, Americans are dumb. The vast majority actually believe that Toyota and Honda can't do any wrong, despite the fact that they build absolutely mediocre vehicles at best.
