What does this mean please?

In my Ford Focus owner's manual it says "Oil expands when it is hot. The level may therefore extend a few millimetres beyond the MAX mark."

If I were to check the oil 10 or 15 minutes after turning the engine off, would the oil still be "hot" and hence have expanded a few millimetres above the max mark? Or does this only apply if I were to check the oil level immediately after turning the engine off? In other words after 10 or 15 minutes would the engine have cooled enough for the expansion to not apply?

I think so, but I would wait about a half an hour (30 minutes) to be safe.

Yes, the oil would still be "hot". It takes several hours to cool down completely. That's why it's best to check your oil level first thing in the morning BEFORE you start the engine for the first start of the day.

I doubt a few millimeters maters either way.
Just check it when it is cold.
And if it is 3mm below full, what are you going to do add a tablespoon of oil?

The absolute best time to check oil is when the vehicle has not run for hours. Other than that when checking oil, give it a few minutes to assure the oil is in the pan, not still in the engine. That minuscule expansion for oil being warm/hot is a mute point unless you are adding oil by the ounce, not quart.

I've only seen fluid levels on a dipstick change from cold to hot when it's the ATF in the transmission. I wouldn't be overly concerned when checking the motor oil.

You do understand your talking about mm! It doesn't matter. Just check the oil level whenever. As long as it is in between the hash marks. ITS FINE!

  • You can have any color you want, as long as it's black? What does that mean? I've seen this a couple of times in places. I know Henry Ford said, but what exactly does it mean?
  • What does ford premium care 100 deductible mean? My car has an oil leak, and I bought it last July. I purchase the premium care package but next to it, it says standard deductible is $100, what does that mean? My husband is deployed and I'm not too care savvy. Please no rude comments. I just need help.

What are the solutions to fixing this problem? Is it safe to drive it for a few more days since I'm very busy during week days and I won;t have time to take it to the mechanic until saturday (in case i can't fix the problem myself? How much would a repair cost?
