What could happen if the radiator fans always run in my car?

I have a Ford Focus that I brought to a shop because the steering wheel locked up not letting me make turns. The shop had replaced bolts on my water pump, replaced an idle pulley and serpentine belt. I spent $400 in parts and labors and brought the car home and that same night it was overheating and I had to pull over to the side of the road. My reservoir had no water and my radiator fans weren't running. I live in Florida and the previous owner jerry rigged the fans to always run. Whenever the mechanics did the repair the wiring got messed up causing the fans to not run at all. I told them I wanted the car in the same condition before and that I wasn't giving them anymore money (after paying 400 dollars they promised me my car would run better than before) but I couldn't even drive a few miles without it overheating and smoking blowing out. They said they would put it back to its condition but I would not have a warranty because it was not the proper way. I'm just wondering what I can do? They drained my bank account. Is it ok for the fans to always run? The temperature gauge stays at about half?

Gary and I will be in the university of California Los Angeles CA and I will send you a call from the following link to the same from the university

If the temp guage is at half, then its not over heating. As far as the fans running all the time, as long as their wired up to the key switch and shut off when you kill the motor, i don't see a problem with it, especially with you being in FLORIDA.

Better yet, you could have them wire the fans to a switch where YOU could control them, if you watch your gauges close enough.

If your car overheated going down the road, you have more problems than the fans not turning on, it should get enough air thru the radiator at highway speed to keep it cool… As long as you werent in stop n go traffic.

You could have a water pump out, or a thermostat not opening.

Running all the time is way better than not at all. As you have learned. Wastes a little energy. Sounds like you went a long way running it hot. With it smoking and no coolant left. I hope you did not put room temp water in the over heated engine. It may be damaged.
Replacing waterpump bolts does not make sense.

What do you expect from a ford? Reliablity? LMAO!

If the fans don't run at all, your engine will overheat and die.

If the fans keep running, the electric fan motor will drown your battery.

If the previous owner had the fans rigged to continuously run, yes, you may do it so if you have your car in a garage every evening and connect it to a battery charger.

And I don't know what else the previous owner may have done; if I was a repairman, I'd also say, I'll try to restore the original condition, but with no warranty. That's all I could promise.

When they made a change to the wiring they should have tested it. And they should have recognized that this was jerry rigged, and was most likely done for a reason. Straight wiring fans does happen.
I'm not sure why the vehicle fully overheated like that, especially if you were driving, ie not in 1 hour traffic jam, as air is moving across the radiators. When is the last time you checked the coolant? Right now, when engine is COLD, never open hot radiator it is very dangerous, top off radiator and overflow tank with water.
I'm wondering if the system needs a full flush, ie drain and fill with water, put in Preston cleaner, run for 20 minutes, then drain and top off with coolant.
Or the thermostat is bad.
Also when a car overheats you need to turn the heater to high and cabin fan to high, this will help cool the car off.

If I were that shop I would have called you and said we found something unexpected and here are your options. I My guess is they removed what they thought was stray wire or something that was incorrect, in effect thinking they are helping you. Most likely an honest mistake.
In as for putting it back to jerry rigged status, they are saying we're not responsible for that issue as it is jerry rigged. Which makes sense.
Do some searches on this issue. Most likely is simply an engine coolant temp sensor is bad, or a relay switch.
It might be something real simple.
If you can try to get it fixed properly.
As for the fans running all time. It is not a big issue, the car may have been like that for years.
It does cause more pull on the electrical system, and the fan motors get more use.
But in FL they may run a lot of the time anyway.
And when cold out the car will run cool, which lowers the performance of the engine and lowers gas mileage.
Best of luck.

If you did not ruin the car by overheating already, and if you have lots of coolant, turning the fans back on should be fine. The mechanics might even do this to their own vehicle, but they do not want the responsibility of doing it to yours.
Now, it is possible that they drained the coolant to do the work and failed to replace it afterwards. But that would be difficult to prove.

Cheat and put a cheap nasty in hose thermo fan switch on it if no can fix the fan controls you'll get out of it for under $100 fitted leave the fan running constantly and youll be replacing it next year.

Lol they drained your bank account made me cry… Yes its fine leave it running, and if there's smoke blowing out… Make sure you didn't hit max mark or you could have compression problems.

  • Truck fans: What is the most superior make? (Specifically the F-series)? I'm looking to buy a truck that can sport a truck camper. Does any F-series Ford truck hold up? Plus, what would you say about thee F-series in specific? Advantages, drawbacks, etc How do they compare to a Toyota Tacoma, or Tundra.
  • Radiator fans staying on all the time? I have a 2007 ford mustang gt. My car does not over heat, but when i turn on the car and it reaches 198F, the cooling fan starts and stays on all the time and it stops only if i turn the key off. It sounds very loud. I changed the coolant myself and the next day it was doing that. I notice that the upper radiator hose is very hot, while the lower radiator hose is cold and not hard. Could it be the thermostat?
  • Got into a car accident at 16. What's going to happen? I'm 16 have my learners permit and my mom was in the passenger seat. I was going to turn left and failed to wait and hit a 2000 ford fzx with my 95 Toyota Camry. My front bumper hit the car in the well area and bent it in pretty bad and dented the wheel well and my car really only has a scratch and a crack in the bumper. We both had insurance he had American Family i had statefarm. What's going to happen to me? And what do i need to do?
  • Why do my cooling fans not work sometimes? 2003 Ford Focus. The cooling fans usually work when they need to, but sometimes they don't which causes the car overheats. I've replaced the entire cooling fan assembly including the resister and a resister connected that was burned up. I'm still having the same issue. It happens when I drive around in the heat for a while. I've also replaces the thermostat and the temperature gauge with no luck.
