Run flat tires for any car?
So I drive a Ford Focus. I'm always worried that I'm going to pop a tire (which i already have on the highway few months ago). Is it possible to buy those kind of tires for my car or is that only a BMW thing?
Hit tirerack.com, and discounttiredirect.com. "In general" - yeah, I doubt tire manufacturers make run flats in your size. They are more of a luxury item.
Dunlop launched the Denovo "fail-safe" wheel and tire in 1972.
They are still available.
Good quality and properly maintained tires don't just "pop" for no reason. If you are driving on tires that are so old or badly worn that they go flat all by themselves while driving, then replace them with NEW tires and be done with it. You don't need "run flat" tires.
Run flats require a TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System). It's going to be a lot more expensive than simply making sure you know how to change a tire and having your spare serviced regularly. Run Flats also only allow for 50 miles at 50mph. Enough time to get to a service station to get a new tire. In most cases, the tire will be toast and you will need a new one. They are a good deal more expensive, noisier and don't provide as good a ride as normal car tires.
You would probably get more out of a AAA towing membership.
Run flat tires are available in a number of tire sizes. Look up your Ford on tirerack.com to see if they offer any run flat models in your needed size. Please do be aware run flats to generally cost quite a bit more than conventional tubeless tires.
Run-flat tires are not worth the cost. They are very hard, making for a rough ride. Even though they'll get you about 50 miles after a puncture, you may not find a service station with the expensive specialized repair equipment, or who can even sell you a replacement. Personally, I want no part of run-flat tires. I've even bought new cars that had run-flats and had the dealer replace them with real tires and a spare.
If someone makes a RFT tire in the appropriate size for your car then there's no reason you could not use it.
Just keep in mind that RFT tires:
1. Cost significantly more
2. Last about half as long as an equivalent conventional tire
3. Have a much harsher ride
So, is all that really worth indulging this irrational phobia?
RUN FLAT tires can be used on nearly ANY CAR! They are made by BRIDGESTONE and afew other ones! INSTEAD of doign this, carry a TIRE INFLATER and REPAIR KIT or use GREEN SLIME if your tires lose air! The CHANCES of losing air in most MODERN tires is quite slim unless you hit a hidden POTHOLE! Use GREEN TIRES from MICHELILN or ECO TIRES from CONTNENTAL or other FUEL SAVING tries with SOFT sidewalls that repel BUMPS and STRONG enough to hold together! TIRE CHOICES are as serious as ANY other item you buy! BAD TIRES can cost you your LIFE! BAD alignment can CAUSE this as well!
- Can 225/70R16 tires fit on rims that have 225/70r14 tires on them? I have 225/70r14 tires on my Ford ranger. I just got some 225/70r16 tires of the same brand, Cooper, given to me. Will they fit on the 225/70r14 rims or do I need to get rims to fit the 225/70r16.
- Will a set of 235/60-R17 tires fit a vehicle with 225/50-R17 tires currently? If they do I'm assuming there would be a MPH difference on the speedometer. Update: The 60 series set is from a 2014 Ford Focus and are stud-less winter tires. They are to go on a 2012 Ford Fusion.
- My tires in car keep going flat Just bought a 2014 ford focus in December. Love it. Last week, i got a flat in the front passenger one. Got a new tire, drove great for a few days. Today, the light went on indicating that the pressure was low, but in a different tire. Stopped at a gas station, had them fill them up, light went off, drove home fine. Now i go outside a few hours later to run to the store and the tire is flat! There's no holes in the tire once my mechanic looks at it.
