Key keeps getting stuck in the ignition?

I have a 2008 Ford focus, bought the car for my daughter as a starter car for univesritys and just something instead of using the big truck. The key got stuck twice sense we got it a month ago, but it's always in the off position. When you turn off the car took the keys out to fill my car with gas then go pay for it, came back out my keys in then they wouldn't turn until a couple try's. Why is this?

A couple of reasons:
1. The steering wheel is slightly turned locking the cylinder, usually have to turn it slightly one way then the other as you turn the key.
2. The ignition cylinder may need lubricated, only use powdered graphite to lube the inside of the cylinder, stick the nozzle of a bottle of graphite in the key slot and give it a squeeze making sure some actually comes out, also apply some to the key and insert turn to on then all of the way back, remove key and repeat 1 or two more times.
3. The actuator rod that the ignition cylinder moves to engage the starter may be getting hung up on something, it's a cheap part but can be a PITA to replace depending on vehicle (never worked on a focus so couldn't tell you how easy).

My suggestion would be to also join an online forum specifically for that car, I can't stress enough how much info you can get from other people who own the same vehicle. Chances are that anything that goes wrong with it has already gone wrong for someone else and they will be able to walk you through how to repair it.

. The lock cylinder (tumblers) seems to be hanging up. I'd try a graphite lubricant like Lock Ease. If that doesn't work you'll need to replace the cylinder. On Fords you usually turn the key to ON and press a pin and pull it out. I'll bet Youtube has a video for replacing it on your particular car. Check around for the best deal online or it may be cheap enough locally.

You can't start the car or get the key out if the car is in gear

This is a common Ford complaint, the key is brass, the keys wear, and the tolerance is to little. EVEN our computerized key cutter would take a couple/three keys to get one right using Ford blanks… Take the car to Ford have them cut some to code right there, do not make copys. The tumber may be worn… When we order a batch of fords we always have them provide six keys… Sometimes the key is worn on one side and pulling it out and flipping it over to the other side works… Welcome to Ford, they've been this way for more years than your daughter has been on the planet…
