Hail damage car was totaled?

So I have a 2011 Ford Focus. It hailed and there's some decent dents on the car but everything still works and no windows are shattered. I called my insurance company and had it appraised and basically they declared it totaled and valued it at 7 thousand dollars. I just financed the car in August for 10 thousand and so I will owe a balance. Can I fight the insurance company to have them un total it? It still works fine and only has 30 thousand miles on it, the dents are just ugly but I can't afford a loss like this right now.

Don't claim it.

It's their choice whether to total the vehicle, not yours. It's based purely on financial circumstances. You could cancel the claim, and drive your rolling golf ball if that's what you want to do.

Tell them to help you get into another car of 7 thousand dollar value and argue the rest up to 10 thousand. What they pay is what's owed and you pay for your next auto.

So no, they won't "un-total" it. So, Simply allow them to total it and then buy it back from them for the salvage value. That way you can just drive it as is and/or later have it fixed and pay for the repairs out of pocket. The "totaled" amount will go to your lender and applied to the loan… BUT… Some lenders may require you to then immediately pay off the balance (In your case the $3,000.) other lenders may allow you to simply keep making payments until the $3,000. Balance is paid off. You should speak to your lender BEFORE you make a decision. Regardless of the decision you make about that, If you don't think the insurance company is offering you enough, do some research and show the insurance company that research which shows the car is worth more than they are offering. Presented with convincing proof, they often up their offer. So.

So… Since when does grammar rules and proper usage practices say that a question should begin with "so"? Where did that come from? Where is that taught? Did I miss that in English class? So…

Grammar does matter!

If you just bought this vehicle a few months ago for $10,000, you paid way TOO much for it. Insurance can only pay "fair market value", so guessing you did not check prior to buying how much your new car was worth vs how they sold it to you for.

Do you have GAP insurance? If so, then insurance pays lender and GAP picks up the $3,000 left on the loan. If not, then you will owe the lender $3,000 after insurance pays.

Just buy it back as salvage and use it.

If you paid $10k for it 2 months ago it should still be worth that much now. I would research the local market especially using local Ford dealer quotes for similar low mileage 2011 Ford Focuses. If the comparable vehicles you find are selling for $10k then challenge the insurance evaluation!

  • I hooked up my car battery in my 2006 Ford Taurus, backwards. Damage? The car ran for two days, but on my way home from work it just died. The lights went dim and the car died. I can do minor work on my car. I've replaced the alternator before. Is that all it is?
  • Rough price quotes for this car damage? I posted a post on the ford fiesta forum which contains the pictures, people on there saying it could cost up to 2k and might as well claim on insurance. what do you guys think? :/ The pictures are the first on the post http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/56556-damage-to-my-car-need-any-rough-ideas-on-prices-as-no-garages-are-open-till-next-week-obviously/
  • Is damage from a car wash covered under comprehensive or collision? My mirror on my Ford F-150 was broken off in a car wash today and the owner of the wash is not responding. I need to file a claim because my deductible is 250 and the mirror costs 750. I wanted to know if it would be under comprehensive or collision claims.
  • Hunting: They totaled my 2010 Ford Expedition. Should I get a new expedition or an Escalade? The insurance told the collision center that it is not worth it. I really like my rental 2019 Escalade that I have been using. Should I buy a new Escalade or a new expedition? We have enough for a 2019. Not getting used. We will get about $10,000 for the expedition. I'm just glad nobody was hurt.
