Yea, that seems awful fast… Sure you're in OD?

Let's do some math.

If you look here
https://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/2009-toyota-corolla-vs-ford-focus-vw-rabbit-subaru-impreza-and-four-more-economy-cars-comparison-tests

Specifically at the powertrain chart. You can see that on a 5 speed Focus. In top gear. You get 23.6 MPH for every 1000 RPM. 5th gear has a .77 to 1 ratio. With the axle ratio being a 3.82 So at 75 MPH. You'll be turning about 3100-3200 RPM.

If you have the automatic then the top gear is a taller .73 to 1 ratio and the axle ratio is 3.73. This would mean that in 4th gear (OD) at 75 MPH you would turning about 2750 MPH. However if you're in 3rd gear with a 1:1 ratio then you would be turning around 3600-3700 RPM at 75 MPH. This is assuming stock sized tires of course.

It does sound like overdrive is not engaging, Assuming you have the automatic, there's a button on the gear shift lever that locks out overdrive. Make sure overdrive is not locked out. If overdrive is locked out, you'll see a light on the dash that says "OD Off" if you see that, push the button the gear shifter. If the light is out, the transmission should shift into overdrive and you'll see more reasonable highway RPMs.

  • Car shakes still? My 94 Ford Taurus shakes on the highway. 65-80 mph and after 80 it stops? I've gotten new tie rods, a realignment, new breaks, and resurfaced rotors, and it still happens to shake even though the mechanic said that the problem was the rotors being warped. Before I spend more money on the damned thing I was wondering if anyone here had some insight to why it's still shaking on the highway. One thing I've noticed is that when I accelerate a chirping sound ensues and chirps faster as I go faster? Any ideas? Please?
  • Can a ford ranger safely sustain speeds of 85-90 mph without any problems at all? I'm looking for a pickup truck that can haul stuff and is good for driving off roaming occasionally but I also what a pickup that has good performance as well. My question is can a 2007 ford ranger XLT 4.0 v6 5 speed manual sustain speeds of 85-90 mph or is that pushing the limits of this truck?
  • What RPM should my car idle while driving and what RPM should I shift? I have a 2003 Ford Mustang V6. 5 speed manual transmission. This is not the first manual car I've owned, but I'm curious. I never really look but I've read in some places that in order to save gas you should shift at 2 RPM before I used to shift at around 3-3.5 RPM. Also what's a good RPM my car should idle at while I'm in gear? Let's say I'm driving in 3rd gear. What's the ideal RPM to stay at before needing to shift.
  • High Rpm for Ford Eacort 1997? We just noticed yesterday that my husband's rpm is higher than my car. It doesn't seem to drive any differently and there's no burning smell so I'm wondering what it could be. At 70 mph it's between 3.5-4 Rpm. I'm praying it's not the transmission but everything I'm reading says it may be. 190,324 miles
