Does anyone have a Ford Focus or a car with overdrive button? Need advice on the overdrive?

Button!
I'm confused. When I start my car, the overdrive [off] button goes off. Do I have to push the button on the gear shifter to turn it on? Or am I already in overdrive? I've read the manual and am still confused. I know that when I see overdrive off that it is off, but there's nothing to say it is on. Help! My question is even confusing, I know! Sorry!

This is a DSLR - not a point and shoot. They work differently.

You are using live view and when you use live view the auto-focus procedure is different,

You auto focus using the * (star) button (the left one of the pair at the top right back of the camera)
Then press the shutter release.

Live view on a DSLR is poor. Holding a bulky heavy camera at arms length will never give you sharp photos. Use the viewfinder! That way auto-focus occurs when you half press the shutter. And your battery will last MUCH longer! Under normal circumstances, you do nothing - when you push that button you disable overdrive - it's on by default. The only time you might want to turn it off is if you were going down a long steep hill and you were riding the brakes a lot, you could turn it off to get some engine braking. Also if you were going up a hill and the car kept changing in and out of top (overdrive) gear, which is annoying, in that case you could also turn it off until you get to the top and then turn it back on.

Other than that - leave it alone - no light on means O/D is enabled, which is what you want almost always, the computer will utilize it when it makes sense. The overdrive is ON every time you start the car, weather it was OFF or ON when you turned the engine off. Read your owner's manual again. It's best to turn the overdrive on as long as your aren't towing a load or steep hill climbing slowly. It is on unless you turn it off. Leave it alone one on unless you are driving in hilly roads and the vehicle can't make its mind up. You will save gas, relax. I think I can make clear how it works.

When you start your car and see the OD Off light come on momenterialy, it only comes on to let you know that the light on the dashboard is working. If you do nothing, you have the OD on.

If you press the button on the gearshift, the OD will turn off and the light on the dash should light showing that OD is off. Press the button again, and the light should go off showing the OD is on.

Under normal driving conditions, the OD should be on and the light on the dash should be off.

So remember, when OD light is off, the OD is on.
