As the victim of aggravated assault, should I sue?

On Friday I was driving across town in my 2008 ford focus when a man in a newer model chevy avalanche decided he wanted to hurt the people who were in the car with him and started hitting everything in his path. He flipped a car, t-boned another and rear ended me with enough force to spin my car around and total it, deploying the air bag and knocking me unconscious for a few minutes. He was finally stopped by hitting a telephone pole, after which he bailed. He was later arrested several blocks away. I gave my report to be police officers and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Thankfully I didn't break anything but I got some pretty bad whiplash, partial numbness and pulled muscles in my lower back.

The man is being charged with six counts of felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. I remember quite clearly swerving into the other lane as I watched him approach from the rear view mirror, and him swerving with me to hit me.

I'm being treated for the injuries sustained in the wreck, but they don't know if I'll have long term damage. But now every time I'm in the car and see someone coming towards us I panic. I've never been so incapacitated by fear as I'm on the streets now.

Is there any kind of additional legal actions I should take again against this man? I've never been in this situation and don't know what to expect from the legal process. Will I go to court to testify against him? Is that the same as suing him, or is that something I should do separately?

Consult an attorney. You should be able to get one who will take 20% to 30% of the recovery. The question is whether he was insured or has any other assets. Driving a 2008 Focus does not scream rich to me, and if he hit multiple vehicles, there may not be enough money to go around.
