$600 to replace a Ford Focus key? Is this for real?
I lost a key to my 2014 Ford Focus. I thought the spare was at my parent's house, but it's not there either. I called a locksmith and they said that I had to go through a Ford dealer to get a new key made… And the Ford dealer told me it's going to be upwards of $600 just to get a replacement. $200 for each key, and you apparently HAVE to buy at least 2… So that's $400 just for keys. Then it's another $100 for "labor" because they have to "reprogram my car". And then it's another $100 for them to tow my car to the dealer because they can't come to me and do it like any other locksmith would.
Is this for real? Why are they so expensive? I chose a Ford because they're generally pretty affordable cars, so this is making me incredibly disappointed with the company. We all know those keys cost less than $30 to make.
Added (1). *Note*
My car is NOT equipped with the "my key" feature or remote start or anything. I'm looking at just getting 2 of the standard "Integrated Keyhead Transmitters", just the key with the built-in unlock remote.
That little key is what keeps thieves from cramming a screw driver into the ignition to start it. As far as cost it seems legit. The having to need two keys I'm not sure about. The big problem here is that you lost BOTH keys. If you had one of the originals then the dealer wouldnt have to go through all that garbage. This isn't just ford I have a 3yr old Honda just for a key is 75 bucks. All new cars are this way. My first car 15 yrs ago was a 91 camaro and back then they wanted 50 bucks a key. You can get a copy from a dealer they have the transponder codes in the system for your car as long as the cylinder hasn't been changed. You give then your VIN number and proof the car is yours and they can make a key it still cost 100 bucks or so.
Not so fast! Any Ford Dealer will replace *just the key from the VIN code from the car for less than $10. If they charge more than that, call the customer service number in the back of your glove compartment manual.
Country Boy is way out of date on security keys.
If you don't have any keys, you must buy two. If you already have a key, the dealer can program the car to accept new one and the old one. Once you have two keys, you can program others yourself.
Ford gives you two keys with the car. They figure that anyone who has both keys is the real owner, so they allow you to program additional keys yourself.
Once you lose two keys, the dealer has to plug in a scan tool and link at least two keys to the car's computer. They charge $100 to do that. That's a fair price. It's not their fault the car has to be towed in. You're the one who lost the keys.
You can buy keys online, but many of those knock off keys have trouble corresponding with the computer. If you buy those and the dealer can't program them, you'll still have to pay the fee.
Bottom line, quit complaining. You lost two keys. Your car has a very sophisticated security system. This is the price you pay for being careless with very expensive keys.
Don't blame this on Ford. All late model cars have expensive keys and most require dealer programming. This is done to protect you and keep your instance rates down. If anybody can program a key, then anybody can steal your car.
Well, all new cars are that costly. Some German cars are even more. I would suggest you find your second set then get a new set for $65.
- What are my chances of getting a loan from Ford for a 60K vehicle (600 credit score) and I make 98K a year? I have two credit cards both 10% utilization, and two loans approx 20K all together with payments at 350 each, rent is 600 a month and that is all I pay.
- Replace 03 ford focus key? I've lost my car key to a 2003 ford focus. The key wouldn't need to be programmed (I don't think) because it doesn't have the lock / unlock buttons. (I have a separate thing for that.) how much will it be to replace it? I won't have a key for them to copy, just creating it based on my VIN #, make and model.

- My 2006 Ford Focus CD 600 radio is asking for a code? I have a 2006 Ford Focus whose radio (CD 600) is asking for a code after getting a new battery. I don't want to deal with Ford here. Is there an easy way to do this?
