Ford 4x4 and low range light on.Grinding noise?
My dads got a ford f150. Not sure the year but i think its either 2000 or 2002. Due to this winter storm that just hit the midwest, he said i could take it. I drove fine to my basketball game, i had it in 4L, and when i got there i left it in 4L when i turned the truck off. I'm use to the automatic lights on my car so i forgot to turn the lights off. I was only gone an hour, came back out and the truck started right up. When i started driving it almost like a grinding noise that gets louder the faster i go. It gets to i believe 3rd gear, then won't shift. The RPMs will go up and i can get to about 50, but 6000 rpms, so i stayed going 35. I tried switching out of 4 wheel drive, but that doesn't even work. Anything that could work to fix it? Should i have him take it to a mechanic?
From page 180 of the 2002 F150 Owners Manual:
Shifting from 4L (4WD low) to 4H (4WD high) or 2H (2WD high)
1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
2. Depress the brake.
3. Place the gearshift lever in N (Neutral) (automatic transmission) or
depress the clutch (manual transmission).
4. Move the transfer case shift lever
through N (Neutral) directly to 4H
(4WD High) or 2H (2WD high) and
hold the shift lever in position until
the transfer case has fully engaged
(up to 15 seconds).
5. If the transfer case does not
engage, repeat steps 1 through 4.

"The RPMs will go up and i can get to about 50, but 6000 rpms, "
Wow, just wow. You don't seem to know what the appropriate use for 4Lo is.
You were *grossly* overspeeding the drivetrain. 4Lo is only used at very low speed (think 20 MPH or lower, and even then you only use it when you need maximum engine braking when descending a very steep hill or maybe pulling a boat out of slippery slip ramp.
"should i have him take it to a mechanic?"
Yep it sounds like you may have jammed or damaged the motor that engages/disengages the front drivetrain. You might be able to free it by putting it back in 2WD and backing up 10-15 feet (on older models this will disengage the front hubs, but I think the 1997-up models use a different system). If you did something stupid like trying to make a turn on cleared pavement whilst in 4L then you might've broken something, and that won't be cheap.
"Also, when i let off the gas, it feels like i'm breaking. The truck will slow down almost like i'm breaking ir that the ebrake is stuck"
No s**t. You're getting a lot of engine braking from the low range gearing and the extra mechanical drag from the front drivetrain being engaged.
- My 2008 ford ranger Truck is making a Grinding noise when clutch is engaged/press. What are my options? I attach a youtube video of a different car making the same sound. Is my only option to replace the clutch or can it be adjusted? If anybody could link a repair manual to a 2008 ford ranger that would be awesome. I tried google and torrent sites but had no luck
- Grinding noise when I turn right? I have a 2011 Ford Fusion and recently when I turn right I hear grinding noise. It's very similar to the sound in the YouTube video. Any idea? I checked the backplate of the rotors they re fine. Sound is coming from the back.
- Rubbing/grinding noise coming from my drivers side wheel/brake? 2002 ford focus se… Also i have jacked the car up, turned the wheel and halfway through it rubbed.(wheel as in tire not steering wheel)
- Car Made A Grinding Noise, Won't Work? I drive a 2005 Ford Focus. When I got in my car and turned the ignition, it made a loud screeching noise. I was able to idle a little, but eventually, it stopped altogether. There's some fluid on the ground and it is below freezing out. Any ideas?
