1998 Ford F150 with occasional Starting issue

Hi guys/gals! I'm currently having a starting problem with my 1998 Ford F150 4.2L. My truck will start perfectly fine at times, and then once in awhile I will turn the key and all I get is a CLICK. But then if I usually wait a few minutes, the truck will start. But I want to get this problem solved.

So far I:
1) Put a brand new battery in
2) Put a brand new starter relay in (firewall)
3) Cleaned the battery terminals and connectors, as well as all the connections going to the starter relay.
4) Tightened up the truck shifter, as I heard sometimes a loose shifter can cause problems with the truck starting due to the truck thinking it's in gear instead of in neutral or park during a truck start.

Two years ago I put in a brand new starter/starter solenoid, so I'm thinking that that starter and it's solenoid should be ok. But at this point, maybe I should look to that as being a possible problem as well, even though it's fairly new.

Also, if there was a good way I could test the neutral safety switch and ignition switch I will try that as well. The problem is its hard to test all these components when the problem doesn't always occur.

Also when I put the voltmeter across the ignition wire going to the starter relay all I got was like 3.5 volts. But I'm wondering if that is the correct voltage when the key is in the run position, but wasn't actually being cranked at the time?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could be high resistance in the battery cables, which you can check by voltage dropping from the positive battery terminal to the starter.

Could also be the starter/solenoid assembly. You mentioned replacement 2 years ago but you can always get bad parts.

  • Issues with 1998 ford ranger starting? MY car will randomly not start, i pop the hood and jiggle the negative wire and it will start to work. The cable is attaced tightly to the terminal, it's the wiring leading away from the terminal I have to jiggle. I was wondering if anyone could help me with identify the problem. My car is a 1998 Ford ranger xlt.
  • 1990 ranger starting issue? I have a 1990 ford ranger that with the key i can't start it but i can cross over the starter solenoid I've replaced the starter solenoid and the starter .still same results wondering if theirs anything else that I'm missing
  • Car cuts out whilst starting a couple times and also because if being revved fully after starting? So yeah, it does that from starting cold i think. It has been suggested that its my Idle air control valve but i've cleaned that out and it still does it. Also replaced spark plugs. Its a Ford Fiesta 1998. However, it idles fine as soon as I've moved the car. So even when stopped it is fine as long as i have driven it since start up. The issues only happen on start up. Any ideas?
  • Why Does Replacing Idle Air Control Valve on 2002 Ford F150 not correct Idle issue? Got A check engine light. Code said Idle Air Contol Valve. Purchased A control valve at parts store. Replaced control valve with new one. Engine Idled up real high. Attempted driving, thought computer had to reset. Engine still idled up too high. Parts store said vehicle had to be driven for at least 20 miles for control valve to operate correctly. Drove truck 30 miles, engine started to surge. Put old control valve back in and engine does not idle high or surge but stalls out.( suggestions) ?
