Why is my check engin light on?

I just brought my 97 ford explorer in the shop for an oil change and I got it back and the check engin light is on but the engin runs amazing. Actually it feels sounds and looks good. The only problem with the car is the gas gage and when I fill it up it doesn't pass halfway

The dealer of the car can read the fault code then will know *exactly what is causing it. No one else can hit the cause right on the button.

"Check Engine" is misleading.
It's a "Check Smog Equipment" light. The vehicle can run normally but the gov't wants their money to "allow" you to run by their definition of clean.

If the check engine light is on it is because the ECU has detected a problem with the emissions system. If you just filled the car up make sure the gas cap was tightened at least 3 clicks. A loose gas cap will cause the check engine light to come on. If you find that the gas cap was loose then after you tighten it the check engine light will eventually go off. If it does not then you need to seek professional help in repairing the problem. Even though the engine seems to be running fine there's a problem that needs to be addressed. The gas gauge not going to full may mean the sending unit is defective. Can also be the gauge itself is bad.
