What does automatic (S6) mean?
Whenever I go to look up a car on the EPA's fuel economy website, I'll often find cars that will say "Automatic (S6)" instead of "6-speed Automatic" or whatever. What does it mean?
Like, the 2013 Chevy Avalanche (which has a manual shift mode) just says "6-speed Automatic," but the 2014 Ford Explorer (which also has a manual shift mode) says "Automatic (S6)."
S6 is a form of automatic shiffting. In certain cars, you can adjust how quickly the tranny shifts. A lower number such as S1 or S2 means the transmission shifts slower, allowing for a more regular acceleration. The higher the number, like S6, means it shifts much quicker, and is more like a sports car shifting quickly to get it up to higher speeds quicker than normal. Of course, it means a little more wear on tranny, and less mpg.
