Where do I put more power steering fluid in a 1997 Ford Explorer?

Okay guys, 19 year old college freshman here with her own car. I recently realized I needed to add more power steering fluid to my car today, when my steering wheel got hard to turn. I know a little bit about cars, and normally there's a pretty clear fluid reservoir that's labeled "power steering fluid" but I have a 1997 Ford Explorer that I bought second hand from an older gentleman, who no longer had the owners manual. I'm away at college, and can't afford to take it anywhere, so I bought power steering fluid, popped my hood, and realized that I had no clue where to put it, and it's not labeled anywhere, and I do not have access to the owners manual, so I'm kind of SOL here. Any help would be appreciated!

" and I do not have access to the owners manual"

Sure you do. Ford has it on their website.

Check page 186 of the owner's manual for pertinent information related to the power steering

Keep in mind that typically power steering fluid is not used up. If it's low, you have a leak, and that could point to a bigger problem. Power steering fluid should be changed every once in a while as well. I generally recommend every 5 years or 50k miles. But most cars can go longer than that if needed.

Left side front of engine you will see the reservoir rember left side is always drivers side and don't buy power steering fluid just buy a quart of dextron 2 automatic transmission fluid thats what was put in them at the factory i know cause i work at louisville assembly where most where made

  • 2001 Ford Taurus power steering fluid leak? My husband bought a new power steering pump and installed it last week, but when he added the power steering fluid it leaked out almost immediately. Any idea of what would cause this?
  • Power steering pump burning fluid? I have a 1991 Ford Ranger. The engine was rebuilt so its at around 70,000 miles. I have to refill the power steering fluid a lot. Way more often then I should have to. I can't see any kind of a leak at all and no evidence of one. It also smells horribly burnt. Almost like the pump is just burning through the fluid. Any suggestions or ideas as to what this is and a possible fix?
