On a 2005 ford explorer how do you change the rear diff gasket?
1. Place catch pan under diff carrier housing and remove all the bolts from the diff cover.
2. Allow the gear oil to drain out into a catch pan of some kind.
3. Remove the clip on top that holds the cover to the diff carrier housing (remember to save the diff tag).
4. Clean out any remaining oil so it doesn't keep running over the mating surface for the gasket.
5. Use a putty knife to remove any old sticking gasket material from diff carrier gasket mating surface.
6. Spray carrier mating surface down with brake cleaner and wipe with a lint-free or microfiber cloth.
7, Spray down diff cover with brake cleaner to clean up thoroughly.
8. Clean up all bolts with brake cleaner and a wire detailing brush.
9. Using a few of the bolts as guides, set up the new diff cover gasket on the cover and mount the cover back on the carrier housing.
10. Position top clip back over the diff cover and install remaining bolts along with diff tag.
11. Tighten bolts down in a criss-cross pattern with torque wrench at specified torque (see below).
12. Remove oil fill plug with a 3/8 drive ratchet w/extension and add fresh gear oil w/friction modifier into the fill hole until oil flows out of the hole indicating full.
13. Reinstall fill plug.
Supplies needed:
New diff cover gasket
Can of brake cleaner
