How to tune up 1997 ford Explorer 4.0?
How fast do you want to go? Speed is only a matter how hard you want to thrash your wallet.
forget the 4.0 as its better to leave the boat its moored to.
buy the 4.6 v8 version instead. As it shares the aftermarket with the mustang/lincoln/thunderbird
A tune-up used to refer to vehicles with distributors( I'm not sure if they still have them on that year or not) where you would replace distributor cap and rotor, spark plug wires, and spark plugs. On a car with electronic ignition this is no longer necessary the most you could do is replace spark plug wires and spark plugs. Nowadays they also consider changing your oil and air filter as a "tune-up" which to me is simply regular maintance
Replace spark plugs and wires
Changed timing chain now it's Pat toponym backfiring like it is missing for the plugs are fouled

- What would be causing my 1997 ford explorer to start running rough when I press on the throttle? The engine is a 4.0L 6 cylinder, runs fine on idle, no check engine lights, but as soon as I touch the throttle it starts to shake and run rough. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
- I have a 1997 Ford Explorer, haven't drove for a year. What can I do? I recently received a 1997 Honda Explorer from my father in law. I changed the battery to a Duralast Gold, didn't start. I put 2 gallons of gas and tried putting in starter fluid, still no start. I have no idea what else I can do?
