Decrease in gas mileage/Rough driving since spark plug replacement?
Recently, I changed the spark plugs in my 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. It currently has 202k miles. I first began replacing them about a month ago, and due to some trouble during the process, I was only able to change 3 plugs. After 3 had been replaced, the truck was riding much smoother, and I saw quite an improvement in gas mileage. I changed the other 3 last weekend, and since I've lost MPG, and it isn't driving near as smoothly. The plugs I put in are Bosch Double Platinum. I checked to make sure all the plugs are firing, and they are. Does anyone know what might be the cause for this? Should I try a different brand of plugs? If so, what kind? One other thing. Since I changed the first three, I've been hearing a tickig noise coming from the driver's side of the engine. It gets louder only when I accelerate. All the plug wires are fine.
Make sure the plugs are fireing in the correct order and check the oil for water and the anti-freeze for oil.
Spark plug wires hooked up right? Two of them switched would still run, but rough and poorly
Improper gap
The ticking is a plug wire off as soon as it gets dark pop the hood and start it you'll see the problem i promise shut motor off before you touch the wires
- Ford Ranger 4.0, 172,000 miles rough idle when starting after sitting overnight or after 2-3 hours. Starts 1st crank, idles rough 1 minute? Or so and then smooths out and runs fine. New heads and gaskets. Cleaned MAF sensor, throttle body and air intake sensor, new IAC valve, new air and fuel filters, new PCV valve. No smoke coming from exhaust and No check engine light. Any ideas what's causing this rough idle?
- I bought an Actron CP9125 Code Reader to try and diagnose a rough idle at cold start on a 98 Ford 4.0 engine. The rough idle had not caused? The CEL to come on. I plugged the code reader in with just the key on and pressed read and the little asterisk goes half-way across the screen one time and stops. I press the read button again and it reads 0 codes. I was thinking it would scan multiple times to check for pending codes or other issues. I tried it with the engine running and the same thing happens. Is this code reader operating properly?
- Pennzoil High Mileage vs Castrol GTX High Mileage? My local auto store has 5 quarts of Pennzoil High Mileage for 16.99, but 5 quarts of Castrol GTX High Mileage on sale for 9.99$. Which one is better, or does it not even matter and I should just get the cheaper one? It's going in a 2002 Ford Focus ZTS with 155*** miles on it.
