Why is Ford the only vehicle manufacturer that uses keyless entry?

Did Ford patent it so no other company can use it?

Will any other company be able to use it in the near feature?

I wanna get a WRX or STi soon and it'd be nice if they would be able to add it to the newer models.

Added (1). EDIT: So I believe I worded the question wrongly, I didn't mean a key fob.

I meant to say a "keyless entry pad" that are found on the driver side doors on Ford vehicles. The 5 button pad (0-10 numbers) that allow you to unlock or lock doors or the trunk.

I have an Expedition and it's great feature if you have to get into your vehicle without your keys or if you want to mess with your friend's car if you know the code.

I think it's one of those things that is nice to have just in case.

Fords the only one? What rock do you live under? My car is not a Ford and I have keyless entry, my friend has a car of another brand that has keyless entry and other brands of cars have it also.

Oh ya asker… Why do I need to list them for you. If your to simple to know and look that is your problem. And I do believe I know what my car does as I drive it a lot.

Sounds like you will never fill your lust

My 07 Toyota has keyless entry. With the fob in your pocket just grab the door handle and it unlocks

Making you stand in the rain at night, pushing numbers on a keypad sounds like something Ford would do…

That touch pad isn't that fun, having to push in a 5 number code… Most people don't use them the key was faster and you had to have the key in hand to start the car… People would program a secondary code they thought they'd remember and forget the new passcode or the battery dies and it defaults to the factory code they never tried to remember… And the factory code was in the owners manual in the glove box and in the trunk… So your friends and relatives would screw with you… I never heard anything good, but then most people don't show up at the shop to tell you how wonderful their cars have been… Never used it on mine. My current car has this key that when I push unlock button it unlocks the door, and using the key in my hand i get in and start it… Now Fords door buttons… Why?
Its a feature that answers no question makes life no easier. Personally surprised Ford didn't drop it decades ago. Maybe the service dept makes enough money off repairs and disabling them…

My grandma's Nissan has keyless entry

Maybe because she lives in Japan

Ford did patent it in 1980 as "keyless entry system", USP 4,205,325 by Haygood, et al., May 27, 1980, which expired 17 years later, like most patents filed in the USA prior to 1995.

They are also found on Lincoln products, at the very least.

The one with the "key fob" is a "remote keyless entry", to distinguish it from the fixed-keypad variety.

Was also patented in Germany, UK and France.

It's actually quite handy if you accidentally locked your keys (and key fob remote keyless) inside, or if you want to allow someone WITHOUT the key to unlock the door. You can, for instance, hide the ignition key somewhere inside (much safer than hiding it outside), manually lock and close the door, then tell someone the code to get in and (optionally) where the key is hidden.
