My 1999 Ford Escort won't change gears till 4000+ RPMs. What could be the problem?

Sounds like transmission issues. It could be as simple as low transmission fluid or needing to be changed. Or it's breaking and you need a replacement or rebuild. Have it checked out by a mechanic

The 4-eat trans is what. And there are sensors and solenoids throughout. Get some professional help, the codes, and the pinpoint tests and an experienced answer as to how soon it needs a rebuild. Sometimes it's just a noisy sensor signal.
There are tech bulletins and trans updates that help the tech be aware of what's going on with it ahead of your arrival, then he runs tests and makes inspections to verify. They may need partial disassembly to change a few parts, or they may say you need a ready rebuilt to save cost.

Transmission internal issue (automatic?)

  • Car won't accelerate, but rpms increase? I replace my alternator on Saturday and starting that same day my car has had problems accelerating. When I hit 10mph, the rpms shoot to 4000 and I have to ease off the gas pedal. Occasionally this is accompanied by a groaning noise. I made sure that the connections to the alternator were secure, but I'm not sure what the problem could be. The car is a 1997 Ford Taurus. I would really appreciate any advice.
  • Why can't i change gears on my manual transmission car? I have a 2004 ford ranger 2.3 4 cylinder with manual transmission. I can turn it on but I'm not able to shift gears. Is it the clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder or transmission?
  • Car won't crank with a new battery and alternator it has no electrical power what could the problem be? I have a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT that has been running for months when I tried starting it earlier today it would click once then nothing. Now it has no electrical power at all.
  • 2001 Ford ZX2 seems like it doesn't want to change gears sometimes? It seems like maybe a few times per week or so, it starts straining as if it can't switch into the next gear. Eventually it switches over and goes days or a week or so without doing it again. Then it comes back, goes away, etc. The whole transmission was rebuilt just about 2-3 years ago.
