How to make a new car key?

I have a 1997 ford escort and I lost my spare key a few years back and I think it's time to make another one before I lose this one haha.
Where can I get it done?
How much would it cost?
Do they need proof of ownership?

Any hardware store, and many other retailers can make a copy of a key. The only time you need proof of ownership is when you are having a key made at a dealership or locksmith based on the VIN

A spare key should cost you about $2.50 or so, you may want to get several so you have spares

Go to a menards, home depot, hobby lobby, or another similar store. They always have an area where they sell locks and make key duplicates. I forgot where I took my car key, but they didn't ask for any proof. They also saw me pull it off of my gigantic collection of keys too.
