2001 Ford Escort ZX2 service engine soon light on and not shifting out of gear?

This happened about 3 weeks ago. The service engine soon light came on and it was like it was stuck in lower gear and not changing over to a higher gear to go faster. Took it to the garage, they pulled an error code (they never said what it specifically was, but briefly mentioned a speed sensor that was an error due to the shifting issue that the computer recognized was odd) and then reset it. They did change the transmission fluid and it seemed to drive fine to them. They said they didn't experience any issues when test driving it. It drove fine for a few weeks with no service engine soon light or trouble shifting. Today it is doing the same thing again. Transmission was rebuilt just a couple of years ago by a very reputable place that does quality work.

What could it be? The light isn't blinking, just solid. All info on the light meaning just states that it is "related to the emission control computer and should be serviced when convenient." The car just passed emissions maybe a couple of months ago at most, if not sooner, so I don't think there's suddenly a catalytic converter issue.

Personally, I think should now be another period of time should not, of course, because of age in progress, things change is diversified range of products

So just what do you expect if you didn't have the bad speed sensor replaced? You have an input and output speed sensor on the transmission. When one or the other has an intermittent failure it puts the vehicle into fail safe mode and you'll only have 3rd and reverse gears. Now since you don't even know what the code was there's no way to tell which of the sensors you need to replace.

It could be many different things as far as the transmission. If your spark plugs and wires haven't been changed recently that could be a problem as it can shift harder if the plugs are bad.

  • Difference between SERVICE ENGINE SOON and CHECK ENGINE light? Is there any difference? I have a Ford Mustang 2002 and my SERVICE ENGINE SOON light is on. Does it mean something is wrong with my car? Do Mustangs also have a CHECK ENGINE light?
  • Service engine soon light is on? I have a 1999 Ford f150 the service engine soon light is on I took it to Autozone it wouldn't hook up to the computer it wouldn't even pop a code anyway I checked all the fluids and I can't seem to find what is causing the light to be on I checked the fuses there's no fuse that is blown I don't know what else to do
  • I own a ford escort and I was flatfoot shifting at high rpm's and it broke down I tried to start it up after it backfired, made a really weird noise and then it just gave up. For a little bit, it would try to turn over, but didn't. My distributer cap was broken and falling off, so I replaced that, but now it won't even try to turn over. I turn the key and absolutely nothing happens! What could it be and how much to fix?
