Can it be a bad wheel bearing even if there's no play in the tire?

I have a 2009 Ford Escape and I thought I had a bad front left wheel bearing. But when I grab the tire itself and shake it there's no play. I was told that it was a back left bearing but my car is FWD, so that can't be possible. Then I was told I needed all 4 new tires because they were cupped. But the noise is coming from the front when I drive and I feel it in the pedal and steering.

CV joints maybe a loose strut

The diagnosis of tire cupping is likely and easy to confirm yourself. Just run yor hand over the tire surface and you can feel and most likely see the cupping. Cupping usually comes from never replacing your struts.

There are bearings in the rear wheels. Not sure why you would think there isn't.

Rear wheel bearing/hub assemblies go bad many times on older vehicles.
Play is not always in the bearing if it's noisy.
If you can feel pulsation in the brake pedal and steering wheel the front brake rotors are warped.
It's easy to look at the wear on your tires. If they are cupped rub your hand in both directions on the tire tread and you'll feel it.
Don't be surprised if you have more then one problem.
If you don't trust the mechanic that told you about the things that need attention go to a private mechanic that is good.
NOT a tire store, lube joint, or chain store.

There CAN'T be no play in the tire, even if the EVERYTHING is in perfect condition.
As your statement Can't be accurate, I would take the word of the PROFESSIONAL that has actually seen the car

If you don't believe what you have been told, then find a new mechanic to tell you stuff.

  • One shop tells me hose is kinked, another says bad wheel bearing, what is going on? Someone mentioned we should replace the wheel because it was warped, we replaced the wheel. We then had the same issue and shop mentioned we need to replace wheel bearing. We shopped around and went to another shop that said wheel bearing is fine, but the brake hose is kinked. They state that the kinked brake hose is causing the wobble sound… 2007 Ford Fusion SE
  • Is a rear wheel bearing replacment the same as the front on 2003 ford f150 xl? I'm trying to understand the concept of rear wheel bearings on my ford f150. Somehow I have confused myself and i'm not sure if a bearing install is the same in the rear as it is in the front for DIY purposes. Can anyone help elaborate on that?
