How the **** would we know what needs replaced? Maybe get a second opinion.

Hi yes he would be right about those too being it is now some 14 years old.

Do you have a CEL lit and codes for the catalytic converters and no spark out of the coils?
It sounds to me as if you have a lube boy telling you to replace parts you don't need. Have you got EGR low flow codes? I'd just drive the car unless the CEL is lit and you have codes that need proper diagnosing!
How do you have a "chunk" missing on the EGR valve?

You need to find a better mechanic. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. I don't know how you lose a chunk of an EGR valve? Is your check engine light on? It sounds like the mechanic is trying to fix a NOx issue by throwing parts at the problem. The same thing happened to me. The mechanic wanted to change my catalytic converter and oxygen sensors because my truck failed the NOx emissions test. It turns out that I had a leak in my radiator and my truck was overheating. BTW, the mechanic wanted to change my EGR too until I told him that my truck didn't have an EGR valve. I would try cleaning the EGR valve first.

I think that the mechanic meant that you have a clogged EGR valve (carbon fills the holes). I'd trust the mechanic's opinion about the cat and ignition coils needing replacement.
