Can you rank these cars in order of cost of insurance, highest to lowest?
I'm a 16 year old male. I will be getting a car in June, but am already thinking about what car to get. Currently, we own a 2013 Ford C-max Energi, which I'm driving. Right now I'm looking at a BMW 320i, a Subaru Forrester 2.5i Limited, an Audi A3, a Ford Edge SE or SEL, a Ford Escape SE, and a Scion FR-S. Out of these cars, can someone put them in order of most expensive to least expensive to insure? Also, I don't know if this affects insurance, but I got a 100 on my written test, and am "A" student in school. Lastly, are there any insurance carriers that are better than others in terms of teen insurance? Right now, we have allstate.
I think you'll find Allstate high for teens.
You can get free anonymous quotes from thegeneral.com - not necessarily the best prices but it gives you a baseline, and they are real quotes. The General does not offer good student discounts, apparently. This source is mostly valuable because you can compare cars and, to some extent, other things you can change. The biggest factor is if you are making payments or own the car outright. If you are making payments the lender will require collision coverage, which can add $500 per month to the premiums!
New drivers should have old cars. Insurance statistics say you have a 60% chance of wrecking the car in the first year; 80% in the first three years. (I made it to the third year, my brother made it a few minutes.) It is not about being a good or bad driver, but about the steep and unforgiving learning curve for driving in traffic. I always recommend an older Ford Focus (2004+)… Cheap to buy, cheap to insure, and cheap to feed and maintain.
You really need to call a couple of insurance companies to get an accurate answer to your question -- because all insurance companies are different in how they rate different vehicles for a specific driver.
In general, the more expensive the vehicle, the higher the insurance rate. Four-door sedans are generally cheaper to insure than 2-door coupes, especially those sporty models with larger engines. Sports cars are always expensive to insure. SUVs and minivans are cheaper to insure. Older cars are generally cheaper to insure than newer cars.
Of course, for a 16 year-old male, almost any car is going to be expensive to insure. Why? Because 16 year-old males have and cause accidents more often than any other segment of drivers.
At 16 you're a minor and your only choice for insurance is going to be being added to your parent's policy as an additional driver since you can't enter an ongoing financial obligation, to on line insurance won't talk to you.
Have your parent call their agent and ask on your behalf as to which vehicles are costly when it comes to insurance.
No. Only insurance companies can do that.
