Can i swap an engine and trans on a truck to a different vehicles engine and trans?

I just bought a 1973 ford f250 and the guy who sold it to me neglected to mention a coolant leak. I overheated the engine and now when i go to put coolant in, it leaks like a sivv out at the back of the engine block. I was told either a freeze plug or a cracked engine block. I need to know if i can take an engine and trans from a newer ford and put it in the 73. What about a gmc pickup? I'm not much of a mechanic, but i know a cracked block is costlyband a freeze plug would be difficult. I just want to take the easy road and swap it all.

If a freeze plug is difficult, how do you expect to just swap out the engine and tranny out of something else?

We don't even know what engine you have in your truck…

It would be much easier to fix the freeze plug. Swapping from a donor of the same year is far easier than swapping from a newer model and swapping from a different manufacturer is more difficult still.

Most could replace the freeze plugs in the time it takes you to go load up and bring home the replacement engine to swap out.
What do you have now and what are you considering… To change from an FE to a Windsor same year was a pain…
If you paid a shop to fix what you have you'd save $. I can't image a cracked block, hardly the weak link. I'm betting freeze plug back of head, if not just a hose.

Good luck dreamer

Why do you think replacing a $2 freeze plug would be difficult if you're going to have the engine out in any case?
But, if it leaks because you overheated it, it's probably a cracked block.
Just about any 351 will fit if that's what you have, but lots of things change year to year and you might need a different ECU, wiring, fuel lines and other stuff. It's best to get the same series engine.

Sorry but this is a total loss as far as i can guess this awful guy has sold you a heap of rubbish. 1973 was too far back for it to be a winner.
