Classic Car as first car?
I know I'm gonna get a lot of flack from the adults here but I'm 15 1/2 and I wanna get a 1969 chevy chevelle convertible( since I live in LA I can drive the top down everyday) or a 1971 Ford Torino Gt and pretty much any car that fit the models of the previous two that I stated, a lot of the older people I know tell me to get a Honda Civic, but they also tell me I'll wreck my car in the first year, might as well have fun cruising in my 69 Chevelle and get it wrecked than cruise in my boring average Honda Civic and get it wrecked. If any of you have had any of the two cars I stated or any classic car as your first car any help would be nice.
If you have a lot of cash go for it buying parts for old cars puts can cost a lot of cash due to supply and demand. Every young bloke wrecks there first car buy a late model v8 to drive every day and drive your classic on weekends when its not raining. I wrecked my first 5 cars.
Do you need reliable transport?
Then don't buy a 40 year old car. Sure they are cool, but any car that old is NOT going to be reliable, and you are likely to have trouble getting even common parts them. Assuming you need the car to get to work every day, this isn't a good thing.
Get something more practical and save up some money to buy yourself a project car for Sunday cruising that you can tinker with as needed.
You would have 2 basic choices with either of those vehicles - buy a fixer that requires lots of work and $$ or buy a restored vehicle and pay lots of $$… There's no in between especially for those vehicles that are more scarce each day ( PS that lots of $$ would be in the $ 30000 range at least and probably more )
- Why don't car companies remake some of their classic car models if people like them so much? Of course safety is in mind because everyone would freak out if they didn't have a seat belt and air bags in every inch of the car, but why can't some of the companies just remake their best selling car models? Dodge could remake their 1948 Sedan and Ford could remake their 1949 Custom. I could list more but I can't think of any more classics.
- Which classic car is bigger? My dad has a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 Conv. I made a wise crack to him one time that I wanted a 1958 Plymouth Fury (Christine). He said that that the car was bigger then the Galaxie. But I was at work today and said something to a co-worker and they said the Fury is a good deal smaller then the Galaxie. I never got to see a '58 Fury in person so I was wanting to know, thanks.
- Where in the UK can I hire a classic american car for self drive, ie, as driver not passenger? I want to hire a classic car preferably something like a dodge charger or ford 69 gto for a day or two as a gift to a petrol head, obviously I want him to be able to drive the car himself. We're London based but could be in surrounding areas to pick up the car.
- What classic car should I buy? I'm a 16 year old boy, making some money this summer and throughout the next year. I really want a "classic" car (1970-1985 ish); what old cars are easy and cheap to maintain compared to other cars of their era. I like a lot of cars, Volvo, BMW, Saab, Mercedes, Acura, Audi, VW, Ford, Olds, Pontiac… I LOVE the look of old Jaguars, and I always see them for sale with low miles and a low price, but I know they're terrible to own… Thanks
