Can you change from premium to regular gas?
I drive a 2013 Ford CMax Hybrid SE. I've been using premium gas but I want to save some money and use regular gas when I go on a road trip. Will it ruin my car to change gas like this?
Yes, you can change back to regular fuel which is what your car was designed to use in the first place. Using premium in a car designed to run on regular is a complete wast of money. It will have no more power, get no better mileage, and provide no benefit whatsoever.
The 2013 C-MAX Owner's Manual is a great resource. On page 192; it states the following information:
Regular unleaded gasoline with a pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87 is recommended. Some stations offer fuels posted as "Regular" with an octane rating below 87, particularly in high altitude areas. Fuels with octane levels below 87 are not recommended.
I recommend using the gasoline listed above. If you have any concerns with your vehicle while traveling, please find a Ford Dealer in that area. Our certified technicians will be happy to take a look, and answer any inquiries. You can locate a dealership by clicking the link below:
That car is designed to use regular unleaded. I have no idea why anyone would be using premium fuel in it. It won't run any differently, but switching to the fuel you're supposed to be using will save you a lot of money.
There's a STICKER on your FUEL FIL FLAP that tells you EXACTLY what is needed for FUEL OCTANE NUMBERS! YOUR ATKINSON CYCLE four cylinder is DIFFERENT from other REGULAR gas burners! VW makes a TuRBO HYBRID car that is AWESOME with THREE cylinders in it! YOUR FORD C-max was BRILLIANTLy deSigned and executed as well! It was ORIGINALLY a car for EUROPE that NOW is made in US plants as a REAL GENUINE DOMESTIC CAR! YOUR MANUAL will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about it! SInce it does NOT require PREMIUM in the first place REG is JUST FINE! Look, up ATKINSON CYCLE engines in the WEB!
Unless the manual recommended premium you've just been wasting money. Just fill with regular next time you fill up. Nothing will happen. Your engine hasn't "got used" to premium.
Why have you been using premium gas?
Ford says…
Fuel recommended:Unleaded Regular
"Premium gas" is not better it is different.
There's no advantage to it, if the car does not specify it.

Read the owners manual. If it says to use premium fuel, don't change to regular or you could void the mechanical warranty.
Depends on what kind of car you drive, My mom has a newer BMW and she HAS to put premium in it all the time
EXATLY WHAT J J SAID
Fuel economy is all that would change. I know that money is the issue but look in the owners manual for the minimum octane and use that as bible for what you add.
You need to read the owners manual for the recommended octane rating your car was built for and stay with what it says.
You can, but the motor will know the difference.
All Premium gas is used for is engines with higher compression. Higher compression runs hotter, and with cheap gas, the engine will incur problems such as pinging, backfiring, pre-detonation. Regular gas is fine.
You should be fine.
You can but if you hear a pinging on hills then you better switch back!
- Is the 1995 Chevy s10's regular cab bigger than the 1996 Ford Ranger's regular cab? I always heard that Chevy trucks have more cab room than old Ford trucks. I'm just thinking if a Chevy s10's regular cab is bigger then the Ford Ranger's regular cab. What's bigger and gives you more space? What smaller and hardly gives you any space?
- How much do you think i can get for this 2012 v6 premium mustang? http://iphone.berglundford.com/index.htm#new_p_2FFord_p_2F2012-Ford-Mustang-75db42e10a0a00de63937097cbfb0d77_p_2Ehtm
- Must I put premium gas in my 1965 Ford F100 390 V8 or can i put regular gas? I was told that it needs premium gas and premium gas only. But the guy who I bought the truck from said it was a myth and it takes regular gas. What gas does my Ford F100 390 v8 engine take?!
- Isn't it hard to force the EU to buy our cars? Ford announced they'll stop making regular cars, and they don't want our gas guzzling SUVs? Or huge trucks. That's what part of this trade war is about fyi, our products that they don't even want. Interesting, but 10% vs 2.5% isn't exactly earth shattering on cars. Plus that article's talking about OBAMA'S proposed free trade not Trumps.
