Can I haul a ford l9000 with my gmc 3500?
I have a 2015 gmc 3500 crew cab dually dump truck. I just purchased a ford l9000 300 miles away. I'd like to just take my equipment trailer and go get it but I'm not sure if I'll be over my towing capacity. My trailer weighs probably 4k and the truck weighs between 12k and 15k. I've this truck can haul up to 19500 on the ball but, I'm not sure if its true. I know I will be over 26k but I do have a cdl. My truck weighs 10320lbs so I could potentially be close to 30k. I'm not registered for that much but, outside of that will my truck handle this ok? My trailer does have excellent brakes and is 20k rated. Also the truck is in NY and I'm in VT 277 miles one way.
Let's put it this way, if you exceed the max gvw or towing capacity and you have an accident, chances are high that your insurer can and will refuse coverage. If an accident involves someone else and insurance coverage is denied, expect a lawsuit that will wipe you out financially
Some years ago i pulled into town towing a large Chevrolet pickup with a very embarrassed driver behind my very old Rambler American. Anything is possible depending on the circumstances. Obviously my little Rambler was seriously working hard and so was the rope. I don't know if the driver of the Chevy Truck ever lived that down, but it was a satisfying day for me.
I would not consider towing that truck with your GMC Not only will it be more weight than your truck can handle safely, your truck is not registered for that amount of weight. A 3500 towing an I9000 is going to draw the attention of every police officer in the area, and they are very likely to pull you over and cite you for being overweight,
You would be better off either having the I9000 transported on a lowboy. I assume that your trailer has electric brakes which would mean it would be hard to find a rental tractor to tow it with, You may be able to find an independent owner operator who has an electric brake hookup so they can use your trailer or you may be able to rent a lowboy and tractor yourself for the trip
The issue isn't if your GMC pickup can PULL that much weight. It probably CAN… At least on a smooth, level surface. The REAL issue is whether your truck can STOP such a load SAFELY in traffic, or maintain control on a road that is in less than perfect conditions, and the answer is NO!
You're proposing to haul a load that weighs nearly twice the load capacity of your 1-ton pickup truck. There's a good possibility that even with the best brakes in the world, your load will push the towing vehicle in a panic stop and you'll lose control. Find some other method of moving your newly purchased Ford truck.
