Can i get the CAR TRANSMISSION replaced here?
I got a 10year old ford car.mercury sable
have 150k miles in it… Just got a transmission issue…
the local mechanic, who has some great reveiws, says it requires rebuilt and gives 6 months warranty.
and says, if all goes fine, this transmisssion can go for next 150k miles.
he quotes 2300 for this… Is it worth to take the risk.
i can't afford to buy another car now. Even a used one.
If you think you can trust the mechanic, then do it. A rebuild is an expensive process because it takes them many hours of labor to do the job. If you don't think you can trust the mechanic, take it somewhere else for a second opinion (and another quote). Don't tell them what the first mechanic said because that can prompt them to say the same thing.
Find a shop that deals with transmissions only. They will likely be able to rebuild yours and give you a two year warranty. Your guy may be a great mechanic, but transmissions are better left to specialists. Go to atra.com or shops recommended by AAA are the highest rated.
Its a tough call.
6 months isn't a very long warranty. And $2300 is a bit high.
You say you can't afford another car, but can you afford 2300? What if a few months after you spend that kind of money, something else goes wrong? Before you make any kind of decision, look around for a cheaper price. I needed a new transmission for my 93 Camry recently, so I went to my old mechanic (in L.A., where nothing is cheap), and he said 1600, then I refused, 1200, and I got it done at a place my current mechanic knew about for 900. 2300 is more than the car is worth anyway.
- Will the transmission need replaced if he changes the motor? My dad has a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500. Right now it has a 351W motor. He wants a 390 (original motor to the car). If he was to change the motor, would the transmission need replaced too? The rebuilt transmission has less then 20k miles on it since it was rebuilt.
- What's the problem here, with the A/C and the idling engine? 2000 Ford Contour SE. 1. A/c blows the air out from the defrost vents by the windshield instead of the vents on the panel… 2. When I'm stopped at a red light with car idling, the car starts vibrating as if it wants to shut off. I was told the problem was a sensor that's connected to the engine that keeps the engine revved at a steady pace while it's idle. Is that true?
- What are the torque specs here? I'm re-installing a crankshaft for a 1956 ford model 650 tractor. Just wanted to know the foot-lbs specs for the mains and rods
- Vin number problems here. Please respond fast? Okay so… I almost totaled my car last summer, and my father fixed it up for me. And when i went to go get a title and whatever they asked me for the vin number of the car i got the parts from, we tryed to contact the guy we got the parts from and we can't get ahold of him and we've been trying to for months now… I need my car. Is there any way we could get around this? I have a 2002 ford taurus
