Well there's a way to find out. Set the parking brake and craw under the truck and watch the shifter as someone moves it through the gears.
Automatic? Can be a shift cable or internal linkage problem. Standard then might be a broken shift fork or shifter assembly inside the transmission. Find local shop at ATRA.COM for more help
